Since the new update and the possibility to build your own base there is this thing bothering me about the player constructed bases. I wonder if i am really the only one who is thinking about this... autodamage. I dont get it. Why the hell is this feature needed? After the base is constructed, it immediately starts to burn, just so, for no apparent reason. Yeah i know, you will say: space is dangerous, and till you got no crew...etc, there is noone aboard who can repair it..." - it may get closer to reality in some form, but it massively ruins the fun of the base construction and the game itself. Imagine you log in and you wont find your base for this reason. There are for sure ppl who cannot be 24/7 online to play Disco and take care of their base or just even to resupply it so often. Every hour that i am online i see base destruction messages. The autodamage is absolutely unnecessary, also noone needs to fear systems crowded with player constructed bases because a lot of ppl would blow the defenceless bases just for fun.
To summ it up:
Crew disappearing when the water/air/food is gone? OK, makes sense.
Shields down when the fuel is drained? OK, makes sense.
Station autodamage? Just NO!
Within the actual storyline and campaign you happened upon several, if not just one, base that was abandoned a long time ago, but was still in PERFECTLY working order!
The Baxter Research Station, with given link, was abandoned LONG BEFORE YOU EVEN GET TO IT in the game.
Yes, it was destroyed, but by Rhienland, not by some magic damage that comes from some wand Harry Potter stole from JihadJoe, okay?
If a base can exist without a crew, without hull panels, without anything but 3 robots and oxygen that lasts for several years until you get to it and it gets blown up by gunboats and bombers, why must we suffer now, when we are much more technologically advanced than when Baxter Research Station was constructed?
It seems the Discovery mod is leading us in a technology crash!
We are not becoming smarter and creating more things that can operate themselves, with AI and robots, but making it so we are DOWNGRADING EVERYTHING.
Rheinland had cloaking systems that allowed for an h-fuel-less cloak, that lasted a time that only those that created freelancer can guess how long it lasted.
It just needs to be lowered. Right now the station uses 1 robotic component every ten seconds, and wastes 40.000 worth of repair power on 360 worth of damage. Or even worse, with both robotic components and hull panels it's 80.000 worth of repair power on the same amount of damage. The station should take damage less often, in larger increments. Right now you need 8.500 robotic components every 24 hours to maintain your base - provided it doesn't get attacked, because if it does, those robots won't save you.
Besides, bases are very common in the world of Freelancer. I mean, dozens of them get blown up every day in missions. Why can't players grow their own the same way?
Also, it's much cheaper to maintain a small base by doing the following (again, taking attacks into account is pointless, so don't):
-heal it up to 8.000.000 hitpoints.
-remove all hull panels and robotic components from its cargo bay
-wait like two days, your station will survive that
-heal it back up with like 200 robotic components
-repeat
So, instead of using 9000 robotic components a day, knowing it's gonna blow up ANYHOW if someone wants that, the same amount can be used to last you three months, provided you log-in every two days. The numbers are rough, but you get the picture.
I do. I am loving all the QQ threads about how hard it is to keep a base running. Well sorry but it is supposed to be hard to maintain a base. Thats why they are run by large factions, and most pirate groups do not have huge defences on them.
Lots of peeps wanted this game more realistic, well now they got that with the bases, and all i hear is complaining realistic is hard. Well sorry, but real life is hard, so get used to it.
Yes,it shouldn't be easy to run a base.But...................
I,as a player, not being in any faction, but as an independant ,feel as if I am being forced out of being able to enjoy the pleasure and excitement of actually building something that I can call my own creation...a player based space station.
I have been waiting for the chance to see how this is done, and to build one for myself, somewhere.
But,it seems that I will never have the opportunity to do so.And this saddens,no,it angers me greatly.
I do not have the ability to spend 24/7 hauling supplies and babysitting a station, because it burns resources at a unreasonable rate, and because other people here think its damn funny to blow up somebody elses hard work, simply "cause they can" or " we like the Q.Q.",whatever the hell that means.Yes,I'm old school when it comes to playing. In my life I have see and done things that would make most, but not all,go running to their momma to save them.....so I have a different outlook on how I do things.Things like trust, teamwork, honor, integrity,in doing whats right, even when you know you'll catch hell for it.
In short,I know this is still beta, but for gods sake devs, please, make this so that everyone can enjoy it,not just a select, chosen few.
I only speak for myself, but there may be others who feel the same way.
And for anybody who has taken the time to read and understand this.....I thank you.

In short, no.
If you want to run one by yourself, do what Cam did and spend 30 hours in 4 days.
Bases are intended as something for people to work together to achieve something with.
They allow player controlled diplomacy, allow sections of space to be owned throughly and completely, allow the construction of goods.
Autodamage is in place for one reason:
The destruction of the base.
Bases do not last forever, nor should they.
They are intended as something for players to work to keep alive and operating.
Currently, I would say that they are not worth building and would advise everyone against doing so till the system is tweaked so you can at least make a profit or have some spare time to actually roleplay with the station.

Sorry, I'm playing a game. If I want real life, I'll go outside.
And realistic? You need 100x more material to build a module rather than to build a base, that's realistic?
You need more material to build a device than to make the factory which builds the device, that's realistic?
A solid, metal base destroys itself after 10 hours, that's realistic?
