The problem with me is that Im worried a lot. The final exam is not even this year, but another year, although Im quite nervous already. What happens when I have to take the exam? I may faint or the like...
Hi all, I'm in the US and my major requires me to take a forgein language. Since I took two years of German in HS I decided to go with German.
It seems I am incapable of learning a forgein language though...does anyone have any tips?
Thanks much.
Hi Mwerte,
Everyone has trouble learning a new language, especially if they do not live in a country where the new language is not used often.
Unfortunately, you picked a language that is particularily difficult to learn and use, especially in the US.
Although English is heavily influenced by German, the two languages are complete different. English is much easier to learn that German. I could advise you to simply visit a German speaking country and practice, but most Germans speak english.
Thus, if you can and would like to take a trip/go on an exchange program, I recommend that you visit somewhere like Austria or Luxembourg.
The trick to foreign languages is: memorization
I cannot repeat myself more clearly. Memorize, memorize, and memorize.
After you memorize, try to use what you have learned.
Hope this helps,
elgato.

Hi Simon,
I have had anxiety attacks before too.
The way I cure them: Play some Disco, hang out with friends, or replace my anxiety with something else.
I think that you suffer from CTMAR Syndrome, aka Caring Too Much About the Results Syndrome.
Don't worry about what could happen after the test. Focus all your attention on taking the test itself. Forget about grades--they aren't even accurate descriptions of a student. Treat the test like a puzzle or a challenge, and I am sure that you will feel and perform much better.
I hope this helps!
Good luck on all those finals,
elgato.

Unfortunatly, I have NO money so a forgein trip is impossible ATM. I would love to take a trip...money...blah, I hate money (gelb). So my substitute is I know the German players on this server and occasionally try to talk German with them.
Thank you for the tips... I'm sure I'll be back here, with Bio and Calc questions...
I am fluent in German, it was the very first language I learned. I know German, Spanish, and English all like the under-side of my tongue!
But when it comes to a language then yes, your option is basically memorize and talk with people in german and let them correct you.
I'd be more than happy to talk with someone in German, my own german has been weakening since I don't really have anyone to talk to with, but I refuse to forget it! That's another important part. Your will. If you want something, you'll get it. If you don't then don't bother.
Whenever I started getting anxiety over an upcoming exam, after I've done my studying, I put everything I can remember on a huge piece of paper or a board (i prefer chalk). Then whenever I look at the mural of information I feel ever more confident. Just keep cool and do things that will boost your confidence like taking practice quizzes. Also, I found it really helpful to chat with the teacher. Usually, they will drop hints for ya (if they are nice) or give you confirmation on whether you are ready or need to study more.
A great study tool:
Concept maps.
Start with a Term, say, Flora.
then, writ down, near it, a related term, say, Photosythesis.
then, between the two, draw a line. write, on this line, how they are related.
Keep going.
Until you have a huge web that contains all your knowledge pertinent to your test, exam...class...life...

You can talk to me if you like. I'm a native German and have average skills in English, French and horrible skills in Latin (ha! I just need it to gain acces to university anyways:P)
I might be able to help out when it comes to Biology as well:)
