That petty band of criminals is a thorn in the side of Bretonia. Better to not have them as a thorn in your side instead. Actually this is an in-RP decision that makes perfect sense from a strategic perspective.

Later after he conquers the rest of Bretonia he can always either give them Dublin as a reward for helping, or turn all his Valors that way and crush them into juice. Either way, at this point in time he's helped his military.
