At about 180 players is when the server starts latency really starts to climb. You can tell it's the server because:
1. Everyone starts complaining about lag at the same time.
2. It's consistently at this level, I've noticed, that fights start demanding better aim.
However, most lag you can deal with. Even in 200/200, if the server isn't going nuts over some base getting shot at, it's not too difficult to deal with. Sure, lag spoils a nice fight, but that really depends what you class as a "nice fight". Frankly, if you think of a slightly laggy fight as a "different" fight, rather than a "spoiled" one, you will be much better off - your aim gets better which helps you to deal with naturally laggy people who either live in South America (Casero mostly :3) or who lag for any other reason. You will also be better at predicting where people are going to be, since the circumstances will no longer show you this on your screen as folks shoot off into the distance.
Everybody else seems to moan about lag though. Truth is, CDs and missiles only really work when there's no latency on the server at all, which essentially means <80 players. I use CDs anyway, because I hate it when people run away and/or troll me all the way to the bank.
PvP can be nice. I think the issue isn't mainly the lag itself, but the insane fighting speeds, which are so extremly influenced by that lag.
In yesterday's fight (Battle of FTU's Base) I must say there wasn't even much lag there during the first attack of the Mollys. Even while there were at least 20 or even more around. The second attack was also not too laggy at start, but I can't say much about it, as I died early.
Of course it would be nice if it wasn't laggy, but seeing how the server should be focussed on RP, it should be not a big deal. Maybe fights should be made slower so they aren't affected that badly by the slightest lag?
But heh. I guess noone ever liked lag, and this lag mostly isn't connection lag, but it seems to be more performance lag. At least when it comes to big battles and capship bumping.

RP and PvP go hand in hand, problem is, the PvP aspect of RP is lopsided for people who have unpredictable internet connections.
