If I understand you correctly here, you're saying that it's nothing wrong with the ships, but that there is something wromg with the system you're fighting in. Interesting thought! I always suspected that there was something wrong in Gamma.

Regarding FPS: Just set 'weapons effects' to low and disable Antialiasing, for God's sake!
This is a DX 8 game and regardless which major cool GFX card you have, it will run in emulation mode.

Indeed. I had to switch mine on manually through nvidia settings.
