Reengaging in battle, not following ID and other intentional acts of rule-breaking do.
It is suitable for admins to assume guilt in situations that are not clear-cut; it is expected that every player on the server has read and knows the rules before connecting, and thus unintentionally breaking the rules is not a valid defence.

yup just like in real life as everyone likes to compare. Not knowing a law, is no excuse for breaking the law.
Old/young rich/poor the laws apply equally to all.

I remember it being pointed out countless times by players on the forum that disagreements should be sorted out through sanction reports to avoid "rule lawyering".

I think that's part of the problem - the admins become the mommy and daddy we can run to when we feel mistreated, rather than just talking things through as adults with the people we feel mistreated by. Afterall we are all here with the same premise, to have fun and enjoy this game we all share a passion for or interest in, and in most cases we can find mutual grounds or agree to disagree without "hating" each other.

I always talk to people if we have a disagreement or there has been actions violating the rules, and it really works most of the time. I have only had to submit 3-4 sanction reports in all the time I have been here. On the other hand I have been blamed for "rule-lawyering" for pointing out simple stuff like "hey you can't hunt pirates in this system on that ID" or "hey mr. indie-pirate you need to make a demand before you get your pews on". I don't see that as rule-lawyering, I see it as stating the obvious in the hope that players' actions might be different in the future in similar situations and to avoid paperwork and overloading the admins, and it usually works.

The rule-lawyering-as-a-crime concept should be dropped completely, it creates a weird artificial filter between players that is counter-productive IMO. We have a brilliant /ignore function for those cases where the "lawyering" is never ending, malignant or unwanted.

In general we should trust each other more, and thereby give admins reasons to trust players more too.

Yes, but the law doesn't hang you for shoplifting.

If in any case I started this post, I would give it name "To many players that are violating server rules".

Well, you'll get your skill after years playing when you need to take shots and when you don't. Somehow it is in your memory and stuff is just routine to you:).

I didn't realise losing your pixels caused you to die, but I'll keep that in mind next time I'm doing something that could break the rules.

Using a real-world comparison for an exaggerated example of disproportionate punishment.

If you have nothing to respond to it with, then there's no point in your responding at all, unless your aim is to look like an ass.

Well, you completely ignored my last reply to you, so I just presumed you had conceded the argument.

Your statement didn't really add anything to the discussion, considering it's assumed knowledge. Nor did it actually dispute my own comment regarding disproportionate punishments.

And the posts above shows why we need rules in general.
