I'll read the article when this animal planet marathon is done. There's this guy who, like, has 20 chihuahuas man. It's wild.
That being said, some of you who can maintain an attention span beyond shouting that marijuana use doesn't impact your cognitive abilities (it was the 14 hours of playing Ratchet and Clank while listening to Muse that made me dumb your honor, not the weed) might enjoy reading this.
Edit: Kaze. Get on the bike or get off of the bike. Grr.
Wow where did you people who buy this crap go to school?
Did no one notice the 'sample size' of the group studied?
There's more people at a movie theater on a Friday night!
This 'study' would be laughed out of any respectable science publication before the editor got to the 2nd page.
But give it to the "news", starved for substance to fill a 24 hr cycle with, and the sheep all start braying!
Puh-lease!
I can find 400 people that prove hourly fapping makes them more handsome too!!!
*looks at Marburg*
See?
...Anyway, I might be even more handsome than I was a couple hours ago, but I can't say for certain because I haven't been able to see myself in a mirror for years. My sight may be gone, but my palms are warm. One may think that's a good trade off, but no. Everyone knows that when you shave, the hairs always grow back courser than before, so obviously, ambidextrous clabbermousers such as myself are also masochists that lack self control.
I blame the weed, which is fine though because If I move to a MedMJ state, I can get a prescription for it:crazy:
' Wrote:Maybe the good doctors should study why their life expectancy is much shorter then normal low iq dumb folks.
Stress, heart disease. Seeing as you've done the job of arrogantly stating they have higher IQs, I'll go ahead and blame that stress on their frustrations over said low IQ dumb folks. It has been studied. In fact, it's probably been studied more.
Redfire, your first post is largely invalid as you've assumed they're using a correlational method. It's actually a quasi-experiment or "natural" experiment and as such does go some way to suggesting causation.
Finnegan, the sample size they've used isn't actually that bad. It's a longitudinal report. It took 4 years. Doing many more people would have been impractical. Which is exactly why experiments are designed to be replicated - it will be done more, and there'll be more evidence to suggest their hypothesis. Regardless, it's not that bad a sample. Data is more frequently extrapolated than you seem to think. Not everyone in the world can be surveyed.
If you haven't read any of the above parts, don't worry, it's relatively individual. Simply;
Cannabis and marijuana usage have been shown to:
Dramatically increase incidence of anxiety disorders
Dramatically increase incidence of cancer
Cause schizophrenia
Stunt brain development and other growth
Cause permanent damage to unborn foetuses
Before anyone then retorts with "alcohol/tobacco is worse", consider if that's really that much of an argument at all, and then consider if I ever said I endorse those.
Champ, I have to concur with most of what you're saying especially the bit about expounded assumptive results, but I think they're factoring out some pretty major datum in that study.
Like, what diets were these people eating?
I'll expound...
If I put rubbing alcohol in my car, it will run.
It will run all wonky, and not for very long, but it will run.
It's just not the correct fuel source.
The same will happen to your brain when you eat processed non-food foods.
Your brain will run all wonky, and not for very long.
Diet can be as big a factor to falling IQ as drugs.
So can carcinogens.
I'd bet you my aunt's left leg that I could do a study showing that breathing automobile exhaust while walking down the side of the road affects IQ as well, if not even equally.
No one lives in a vacuum sealed box.
To draw a line from cause to effect, circling around variables, is bad science.
Also for every study that shows this:
Quote:Cannabis and marijuana usage have been shown to:
Dramatically increase incidence of anxiety disorders
Dramatically increase incidence of cancer
Cause schizophrenia
Stunt brain development and other growth
Cause permanent damage to unborn foetuses
I can find one that refutes it.
The evidence is by NO MEANS overwhelming.
Unless you WANT to believe it, in which case no amount of facts is going to convince you (much like religion)
EDIT: Burg, I wasn't trying to insult you, in fact I tried to find the person I know that is LEAST likely to take umbrage to my poke.
Hell dude, I took no offense at all...I was just playing along....the hairs on my palms are honestly no where near as course as I claimed:crazy:
Now, Champ: I hate to burst your bubble, but let's get right down to it: Based on your claims above...You simply have no real clue of what you're talking about.
I admit, I'm notorious for treating claims like yours as a joke, but that's simply because I have a much deeper understanding of it all than you do. If you want to back up your claims with credible facts, then we could move on from there & continue. I hereby shout BS & call you out to show what ass you pulled your beliefs from.:P
Now, don't discount this as a troll post...Gimme someone who knows their stuff & they will find a few agreements tween me & (whoever) but common propaganda that lack credible sources simply holds no water & makes for fools who only pretend to be knowledgeable enough to speak that trype.
Finnegan, can't agree more. Controlled longitudinal experiments are practically impossible because we're not allowed to put people in vacuum sealed boxes. At the same time, removing them from a normal life would have a huge impact on their IQ and their sanity, for that matter - so keeping them in their normal routine and then seeing that frequent marijuana usage is part of that is important. Still though, I can completely appreciate where you're coming from, and yes, sadly because of the nature of this topic people often refuse to be swayed or often even consider the opposing argument. While you can no doubt find some studies to oppose what I stated in my first post, the idea I was pointing at is that multitudes of studies in favour of those statements exist.
Believe you me, I'm hugely in favour of medically prescribed marijuana. It does some awesome stuff in the right biological circumstances. I'm just against over the top recreational usage, or what I'm tempted to term abuse.
I'd be very much curious to see that automobile exhaust study. Very, very curious. You can keep your aunt's left leg though. And her right one. Whatever. But it'd be interesting to see if there is a statistically significant decrease :3
Marburg, hey, no worries. Bubble burst away, if no-one challenged ideas we'd still be in the dark ages. I do take a little offense about you saying I obviously have no real clue about anything, and then criticising me for failing to show evidence after you didn't yourself. It's presumptuous to say the least. Introspection I might add, is little use in trying to argue with me on this matter. I was going to try to keep empirical studies out of this because they do get a bit tedious
I also didn't pull my facts from any ass, but from papers. That I've read. Papers by scientists.
I agree the common propoganda used by either extreme of the debate is often hugely false and stupid, though. I too, reference Fox news here. However, keep in mind that certain things are wives' tales, and certain things have repeated reliable experimental evidence. I'm not blind, for example
Finally, I'll also (also also also also) note that I'm happy for people to use marijuana recreationally even if it's illegal, so long as it has no impact on me, in any direct or significant indirect sense, regardless of what I believe the effects to be, on the cynical but valid perspective that the world is over-populated as it is.
So, I'll go hunt down some of those papers if you like. Give me a few days or a week or something; I'm a busy guy, but I'll see what I can find. And hey, if I fail I'll even consider changing my stance.
I admit I was in a mean mood this morning and after re-reading my own post later, my combative tone towards you was honestly just knee-jerk, unnecessary showbiz. I shoulda went off to make a sandwich before posting, but I decided to be uppity on an empty stomach instead...so, for my tone in general, I apologize.
Anyhoo, just to be clear, the reason I didn't bother giving evidence to refute anything is because It's not necessary. I didn't make the claims
A couple of days, a couple of weeks...take however much time is needed to get specifics. I'm patient, & like you, I'm willing to change the way I think in times when I'm proven wrong...I may be stubborn, but luckily, I'm not stupid or static.
I just have a few easy questions to keep in mind in the meantime
Cannabis and marijuana usage have been shown to:
Dramatically increase incidence of anxiety disorders of those, how many already possessed anxiety disorders for the pot to aggravate?
Dramatically increase incidence of cancer
[color=#FF6600]Inhaling smoke can do that...not just pot smoke.
of those, how many got cancer from ingesting the pot orally
& how many from a smokeless vapor delivery system?
Cause schizophrenia Were those with a genetic disposition to schizo screened out first?
Stunt brain development and other growth no need to argue this really, but again, smoke can do that
Cause permanent damage to unborn foetuses sure why not?...but of those, can the study guarantee it was the pot alone
that did the damage & not a combo of factors alongside?
