Almost everyone uses it for faction organisation and communication.
It got essential for any disco player.

While being in many different skype chats like faction/group channels (which often need even two chats), emergency chats, mining chats, help chats, private chats and a few tens of other chats, Skype gets to the point of working up a sweat.

Meanwhile your Skype history grows steadily. (Mine for example counts now almost 250 mb.), Skype just refuses to work. So-called Skype lags are no longer unique, and even though you've set alerts off in every chat, you're not able to read them all, and marking them as read is getting you tired.

So you'll leave all the dispensable chats. But still, Skype is behaving like a 90 years old. Is it because people are making fun of sending files and contacts through Skype chats? Should you delete your whole Skype history? Or maybe is it because your contacts list flows over? So, leaving more chats and removing contacts... and still no improvement of Skypes performance.

Ok, now we're getting serious, and you'll try out older versions of Skype. "When it's smaller, it should run more smooth, no?" - No.

The fact, that your skype.exe needs more ressources and lowers your cpu performance more than your freelancer.exe is disturbing. But what to do? There's no alternative to Skype. So you're asking yourself the question; "How to tune Skype?"

What can you do?

It is. At least I can do it with Windows XP.

Search for: Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Skype\Skypename\main.db

I just started using it for disco a little while ago, fresh skype account, no history, and it lags like hell for me too. The problem is the way skype works, it uses a kind of peer-to-peer with a host, and when the host loses connection then it will lag until a new session is negotiated. Like when you are trying to pm somebody and the messages dont go out until he logs in, same thing, the host is down.

Not really fixable either

I'm using Skype 4.2 now.

Compared to my 5.11 version, it never crashes, has much less skype lags and takes less than half of the cpu ressources like 5.11 did. Besides you can use html again. Only negative point is, that you have to get used to the old smileys.

My conclusion: Every version above 4.2 has a horrible performance.

You are right, but i'll say, every version above 5.0 has a horrible performance.
