Don't know first thing about the game but it sounds like there was a shortage of ale...

Wide awake in a world that sleeps, enduring thoughts, enduring scenes. The knowledge of what is yet to come.
From a time when all seems lost, from a dead man to a world, without restraint, unafraid and free.

Nope, I had alcohol to drink my dwarves were well drunken. Though the guy did lock himself inside one of the workshops before he went batshait bonkers.

Sometimes they go crazy for no reason. Did he have or want a pet? If so, its likely the pet died or there were a shortage of pets/happiness/food/drink/sleep/rooms.

I remember one time a Hydra killed one of my cats, the poor dwarf owner released all of the lava. And I mean -all- of the lava.

Although my most memorable Dwarf Fortress memory was, "Why is my screen covered in 'E's?" I shortly realized that those were elephants. Lots and lots of elephants.

There are some tutorials online if you need to learn the basics, for the more complex stuff, well you might find a tutorial or two, but most of that is learning through experience.

If your dwarf locked himself in a workshop it means that he/she work on something very cool thing, of course its random so you can't change the outcome. However the materials can vary wildy and you dont know what they require for the masterpiece. Make sure you've got lots of crafting material in your stockpiles.
If you cant procure the materials than you got two choice:
1. you can build a wall around your workshop and see that your dwarf starving to death
or
2. you can wait and see the outcome of a dwarf who after going alcohol fuelled rage, begin deliberetly decimate the population of your fortress and you will see lots of dwarfs going to throw tantrum and running berserk. This will lead the inevitable FUN!

Oh my I haven't played that game in a long time. Grabed a copy of Lazy Newb Pack (awesome suite of tools as well as texture packs) and went on a week marathon of it. Such an amazing game, and yes, very addicting.
