@McNeo: Xenos SHOULDNT be attcking Manhatten....they are a rather SMALL force compared to the Liberty Navy and police forces at the planet, in RP of course. This would be just the ticket to get them to back off and attack Detroit.......

That's the point. Right now the Liberty Rogues and the Lane Hackers can simply sit in front of Manhattan (assuming the LSF don't outgun them) and kill everything in sight. They shouldn't. And there's a reason there are two kinds of missiles mentioned. One for big ships, the other for the small ships. The small ships don't even have to worry about the big ones because they're only moving about 150 m/s; easily dodgeable. Only the Battleships and Cruisers have to take heed. The little missiles ARE a threat, but if you REALLY think it should be possible to take an all-bomber force in front of Manhattan and make it out without a single casualty, then there's a problem...

How would the missile launcher know if the ship is big or small?
I say, planetary laser canons - remember, in the first of the first Star Wars, during Hoth evacuation the rebels had that very pathetic but powerful Ion canon shooting from planetside. not too acurate, but damned powerful, and you can hardly miss a capship with it.
Then, orbital missile platforms. No even better, I'll take exemple from star wars because its the only exemple of planetary defence ive read up to now,
Make up defence stations. in SW, they (Golan Defence stations) were the size of star destroyers, but lets not exagerate here, this is FL, so maybe a thing half the size of the west point academy style of station. Mount them with high-tracking laser guns, fast refire but moderate damage. and missile turrets. And if possible, even torpedoe turrets, as well as cruiser disrupter turrets.
I think quite the opposite here. I think those weapons should destroy big ships, not fighters.
Fighters aren't really a threat to the Planet, why would anyone bother to make something big just to kill them?
They should be concentrated on big ships, able to bombard the Planet.
Like Battleships and Cruisers.
No one is bothered by a bunch of fighters flying around the Planet, they are not important.
While big ships are quite a problem.
It would be quite impossible to hit a fighter from a planet, don't you think? You can hardly even see it from the ground.
While big capital ships are almost immobile and can be hit easily (like Xing said, SW example).

meh, yes.
But, note that in house systems, there are actually capital ship patrols which serves as defence units - and powerful one yeah. So, maybe station one at the important planet is as simple as that. I know some are already like this.
Those patrols are useless. Really, they are.
NPC Battleships (non-stations) can't hit anything, and when they do, they don't hurt.
If they are made better, then yes.
But still, Crete and Malta don't have those Capital ship patrols.
What would they do with their defenses?

well, what exactly makes the npc patrols weack? maybe their serious lack of shields?
I was thinking at putting satelite battleship around planets. Things you cant take down exactly except by disabling their guns, which can come back online after a while.
Problem is, satellite BSes aren't always the best option. And I want torpedoes, pirmarily, though Golan-style platforms is actually a really good idea.
