I see no reason why weapon hard points can not be assigned to planet models, or a model placed within, then create a weapon that has a slower projectile speed and long range. Calibrate it to work only on player objects within 1 k of the planet (assuming these to be close orbit defense weapons)
Eppy's big missile idea is more problems then it is worth, but having guns to knock out any hostile person stupid enough to get that close to stronghold (Which any planet would be) should not be a problem to do.
But in all honesty it is probably better to leave any planetary defense grid stuff to roleplay. Then it can be tailored to ship type (Nukes for Bs, Guns for Fighters) and will not cause any in game problems. (Like nukes targeting starflyers)
put large laser platforms inside the planets, then, they work like the SW ion cannon, and if a fighter has trouble dodging the big laser/plasma things, they need the practice....I really don't see it being a problem, except to the transports who are a bit trigger happy with a cd...
Just make the damn weapons on the Docking ring and such strong as hell. Why waste space by putting weapons on the BACK of a damn planet, when most people hang around the Docking Rings?
While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack http://pastebin.com/SYQXBufs
:crazy::crazy:first thing you see is a Batrian or raiders frieghter playing with his weapons in front of Manhatten with a few LSF looking on, next thing you see if this BIG BIG Fireball from the 100+ nukes they fired at it to make it cease from playing with said weapons, and the LSF are launched to Pitsburg and Buffalo from the blast.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

well, single eared dude you are wrong for the case of Kyushu, sometime I lurk my pirate gunboat behind the planet, waiting for the trader caravans so to avoid the battleship patrols. NPC doesnt come too often there. Thats why I stay in the back.
The point is to make RP bombardments harder, and not such horrible powerplay,
so, yeah, you should make the whole planet defended...otherwise, they would just bombard the other side.
hence, I think the idea of guns in the planet is our best choice. If it can be made. But I dont think you can put missile, I'm not sure but will they get destroyed in atmosphere?
anyway, also suggest to give shields at npc capships. such technology exist for us player, why would a house navy not use it for their fleet?
I say we put one weapons platform at the north and south poles of each planet, four around the planet at +45 Degrees in a circle, four around the planet at 0 degrees, even spaced out so that they are not next to the docking rings, and four around -45 degrees.
All platforms surround the planet, thus a defense grid.
Instead of nukes(sorry eppy), we use shieldbuster missles that deal 245 hull dmg and 50,000 Shield damage, that move at 20m/s. Each platform is armed with two battleship cerberus cannons too.

' Wrote:I can forsee large problems, one of which being that it will be really really pointless to fly an LF if you get instakilled by weapons platforms..
However, the soloution to the problem of making them planetside launchers is easy. Put the weapons platforms inside the planet model. job done.
EDIT: I am not in favour of this concept, actually... what would smaller factions do, which have few allies ? (Xenos attacking Manhatten for example...)
A light fighter shouldn't be able to hang around an enemy planet. It's a light fighter.
Xenos are supposed to be attacking ships in tradelanes or making the occasional daring raid on Detroit, not besieging Manhattan.
I'm in favour of making all station weapons beefier. An enemy base should be a thing to avoid, not something to farm for kills.
