While in .85 I was really looking forward to all the new stuff that was to be in .86, that exact stuff has horridly disappointed me. Though that's probably because I haven't had the chance to use any of it myself yet.

I use TS and ZOom myself, but trust me even thought It's much easier to aim and kill the hostiles that stuff still sucks. I miss the old fighting style, but the sad fact is that with it in this mod nothing can be done in the battles.

I just want to point out that you have problem with few things, mainly related to PvP. That´s okay. But 4.86 isn´t just this... So it is little unfair to devs to say "4.86 sucks" when you have problem only with some PvP related stuff.

Turret steer means to move up, down in turret view while shooting.
Turret zoom means you zoom to see far targets that are normally out of your view.

Turret steer is defined by Pitch in controls.
Turret zoom, you simply press and drag Ctrl-Z.

Remove Zoom on EVERYTHING. (and keep normal GB stats the same)

Make cloaking give a message and declare you PvP dead.

Drain energy while cloaked.

...

Profit?

just gotto be clear about what you WANT. its often easy to say what you do not want - but thats not exactly what you want.

I agree with the OP on some points. In my (humble) opinion, PoBs offer a beautiful platform to RP from, but it removed some of (fun!) work for factions concerning supplying houses with commodities. Now it's just base after base run. Pretty much every faction or person I know seems to be occupied with their base(s). These days I hardly see miners of various ores having a conversation with someone who hires them to get filled up, as instead the miner generally sells it to a nearby base. Yes, I might be guilty of buying of said base(s), but encountering a miner is rare these days.

It's getting extremely dull in Sirius. Before 4.86 I avoided Liberty pretty much all together, as RP quality was and is lacking there with (most!) people. And sure, we got new folks coming in, and you can't immediatly expect anything going smooth, but still. Now, I have a character or 2 in Liberty to atleast encounter people not focussed on base supplying all the time. And I still hate Liberty.

TS, TZ, cloaks and jumps are a nice addendum, if tweaked.

I actually took a break of Freelancer when 4.86 came out, for about 3 months, to avoid the initial storm and because I needed a break and since I'm back I've been thinking why PoBs. Been saying so too. I won't change my mind on this subject. They're only used by a few out there as nice RP platforms. Most of the users are money obsessed Scrooges.

Had to say this somehow. Finally cleared it. xD.

The problem with TZ is that it reduces the need for skill. Now, Im not one of those people who thinks we shouldnt have new stuff that makes things easier, just so the old guard can use their uber skillz picked up over the years. But I think the New Stuff that makes things easier, should make them easier by rewarding skill! Lets face it, its no fun if you dont have to try right?

Easy to learn easy to master right? ATM its more like hard to learn, easy to master. (Though its not really hard to learn, just a bigger step from not knowing it to knowing it, than it is from knowing it, to mastering it.)

I miss 4.85.
I had much more fun back then.
Summarizing my feelings about 4.86 features:
- Cloaks: toys for lolcaps or spies. Can't counter them. Using 'em for smuggling is just silly as smuggling itself is less profittable than simple lawful trading even without using half of your cargo space for fuel. Useless for snubs. Cloaking caps and spies only generate frustration amongst others.
- Jumpdrives: Well, we've seen Jumping Zoners. Yeah, that's what JDs are all about. I have never actually seen anyone using jumpdrive for anything else. Jumping barges is fun. Besides that, mostly useless.
- Docking modules: Tell me... why would I actually use them?
- POBs:
Scenario 1: Yeah! Let's build some storage space! Wait. Do I really have to haul 12k of stuff to have another 18k of storage? Every day? Well... maybe I'll just borrow a barge then? [FAIL!]
Scenario 2: Let's build a base and then build factories and then build cloaks and jumpdrives. (few weeks of powerhauling later) Oh, wait... they won't buy my stuff... [FAIL!]
Scenario 3: Let's block this Jumphole with a base full of turrets! (on forums: Q_Q Angry) [WIN!]
Scenario 4: Let's destroy this base of our enemies. Lemme just calculate it... we only need... 758763092 battleships. Too bad we can't use caps... [FAIL!]
- Gallia: Huge empty space, with irritating tradelane network. Oh, and on the far end of it, they sell cryocubes so every POB supplier has to go there. Poor bastards.
- TZ/TS: LOL, I HAS FUNBOAT. DIE PIE RAT!
- RP trade: Oh, yeah, I remember we did that. But now, we have to supply our POB so we don't have time for such a silly thing as RP. Oh, but you can always powertrade. It's only 50% more profittable than back in .85. For no reason... or maybe it's because we needed some moneysinks...
- Technerf: Well, actually... I don't mind it.
- Hellfire Rockets as anti-GB weapon: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

And yeah, there probably are some cool things I didn't mention. Maybe I forgot about 'em because of all the silliness i come across every day...

EDIT:
Oh, I know... There's a lot of great stuff when it comes to lore, infocards etc etc. That's a big bonus when compared to .85.

I can agree to 200% to the post above. This is how 4.86 looks one year after it is released.
I can add many points for it:

1 Cloaks
1.1 Not working for snubs if you does not fly hessian bomber that was magically instantly balanced to be used with cloak by the same people who were not able to fix the gb guns in order to allow the whole server to PvP normally for one year time. Overpowered on battleships and transports and almost useless on cruisers. Not funny CD bug, together with no cloak detection device.

2 JDs

Useless if you are not powertrader or oorp base builder.
Small ships cannot jump and they should be able to do so.
Putting the coords without extern program is hassle.
The Barge is OP with jumping as money maker killing the whole economy. It took 8-9 months to nerf it and even nerfed it still beats all normal ways to making money. I and one friend made around 300 m per hour(150 m per person) jumping the cryo/iridium trade between delta and langelouc. We used 2 extra fuel supply ships and program to give the coords. It is just wrong, we stopped after few jumps. But there are people that make this continuously for many months by now.

3 Bases
Admins should not allow everyone to make hidden and oorp base. Simply restricting them to the official factions via admin given base builders. The poor official factions are fading away and are less and less in numbers both ships in-game and factions overall.
It kills the oorp base building, oorp base supply, oorp base sieges.
3.1 Be damn harsh to the oorp base abusers- under harsh I does not understand to beam them up in the admin lost battlestar base to buy cloaks for 30 000 credits kill themselves several times to spawn there again and buy more on the price to loose one pathetic cap8.
3.2 Make the bases brutal money sink- allow people to buy their supply if they are too lazy to bring them directly from their POB for insane price. I see 2 B for 1 week supply nice number, also this afer removing the barge nonsense.

4 Barges
Kill this damn oorp overpowered thing with fire. It is ridiculous I sold one for 12 billion.
I guess the group that bought it made the money in 1-2 months, they would return their investment in 1 week using it to jump ores. I deleted the banks later since having so much credits is just wrong.

5 Mining
Making 23454635 mining locations kills the activity of the server. Killing the traditional mining hubs and allowing mining on the same profit level in some distant empty systems is just wrong.

6 Balance
The better PvP things that should not be better since 4.84-5 were not fixed, instead we got bottlenoses and ascos, and ai cruisers as addon.
The only real good thing was the nomad fix and the new nice balanced ships with few flaws however.

Conclusion:
Smaller updates and patches that fix the ongoing problems instead huge ones would remove the frustration by the obvious bugs like OP GBs or OP barge jumpers for example.
Also ship addons and replacements together with the smaller updates would keep the people more interested in-game then giving them package, it is psychological thing, this is the way that our brains work. I do this for a living, I sell stuff in very specific almost closed for outsiders market , even experts with 20 years experience love shiny stuff, the proper branding and the proper user manual are with the same importance the quality of the product itself, the product by itself is perfect but the small flaws and the lack of polishing need to be fixed.
In general I consider 4.86 for a long test for all the good new stuff that we got, hoping that it would be fixed for the new version.
