I'm not a huge fan of emulators (I perfectly know how to use them, though), but I saw FF7 for pretty cheap on Steam. I'll be honest, I've only played FF1 - 6, and I have no idea of if I should get FF7.
From what I heard, this remake doesnt really improve anything (unless you install mods, at which point i dunno), and 12$ price is not THAT cheap, it costs more than playstation family remake. I would recomend going emu, if only for the ability to save everywhere. I also heard steam sometimes messes saves up.
Also, i dont understand why everyone loves this game. I bought it for ps3/psp and abandoned after playing for some time. No urge to come back to it. If anything, I would recomend you check out ps2 emulator, particulary xenosaga series if you are interested in rpg. And have I mentioned FF12 is my favorite ps2 game?
EDIT: ALSO check out persona 3 for ps2. In UNDUB ofcource.

I spent £5 on the square-enix store when FF7 HD came out earlier this year, not a massive improvement but it certainlly holds many great memories from 97'
I can't believe you've never played FF7, its certainly one of their best works, i'd give it a go. FF7 was released on PC too at the time so you've no need for emulators.

You don't understand.
Everyone loves this game for one reason....Nostalgia.
When this game came out in 1997 (some of you weren't even born yet, which makes me feel really old), it was a big deal.
Nothing like it had come before....Playstation was only a year old or so.
You have to remember, before Playstation, we had Super Nintendo and Genesis/Sega CD.
It was a big deal. I loved the game when I was 16, but I don't think I could play it after games like Skyrim and whatnot.
@Bootsiuv
I think I understand a little, FF12 was first jrpg i played (didnt bother with ps2 before), part of the reason i like it so much.
And funny thing about rpgs in general: I played both morrowind/oblivion, so skyrim bored me VERY fast. Played dragon age origins, DA2 bored me even faster. Enjoyed mass effect 1, I still hate mass effect 2/3. Didnt even bother with any FF after 13, and for good reason.
And funniest part: i played both persona/xenosaga quite recently, not a single negative emotion. I'm also looking forward to playing KOTOR, much more than new ME. Its nice question where progress ends and degradation starts in games.

Its was great for its time and yes after skyrim it doesn't have that same WOW factor but like you said people play for nostaligia because it was such a great game.
I've played through it again, gotta say i missed a lot back then
FF7 Well if it the old 1997 or what ever year was when it came out for PS and PC it was a fun game. They did make one for PC and PS. The PC one had a bug that crash the game by the Chocobo Race part there are way to fix it. The bug is with window XP and Up

Its not just about lack of WOW, its about stupid overhype. Skyrim is plagued by the same problems as oblivion, but for some reason everyone screams "game of the year!". Its MUCH worse with mass effect, every thing i enjoyed about ME1 was destroyed. "We heard you like character leveling, so now every character has 3 active 1 passive skill with only, why worry?", "We heard you like good storyline, so now SPOILERyou play as errand boy for person you wanted to kill before and never actually met" And yet only thing anyone can say is "awesome shoter mechanic"(not). Quite sad it is.
EDIT: Back on topic, i doubt you will like ff7 if you havent played it before. I recomend checking games i mentioned before.

If you played FF1 - 6 and liked it you should get 7 as well. If you didn't like them (why the hell did you play 6 parts then?!), then don't get 7.
Now the main question was if you should get the steam release anyways.
If you want to pay for it and want to "own" it, do it.
Otherwise the steam version won't be anything special, I heard you can buy level up packs or something (for real life currency) in that version, but yeah that's nothing I would call a deal breaker or anything, it's just an option for people who don't want to level, I guess.
it's still a great game, and not just for nostalgia. main character is still one of the most developed/complex in any computer game, and the main storyline mixes contemporary relevant stuff (still relevant after 16 years, not bad), with some really out there stuff you won't get in games before or since, there's a big Shinto element to the plot for example that most likely passed every western kid by when they played.
the gameplay is dated sure, but I mean, so is skyrims, and that was dated for some years before they even made it.
plot and themes still stand up today if you like that stuff.
