English longbow or yumi?

Anyone with common sense would have won Agincourt against the French man, but Kudos to the English for actually exploiting the tendency of the French to march through mud with heavy unmounted knights. That said the English Longbow is a stuff of legends especially the 80 pounder. Mind you the bow which conquered the world was this

Knights learned to be afraid of that weapon very quickly, because if it had the right point on it, it would easily pierce their armor, even from a distance.

This of course made lightly armored, highly maneuverable groups of soldiers armed with the longbow a very effective force in any battle.

Actually, full plate was pretty effective protection against the arrows, whatever point was attached. This was because the arrow shafts had to be made of the right materials to stop them from shattering on impact. On the whole, due to the huge numbers of arrows the English archers got through, the shafts were never of high enough quality to actually allow a bodkin to properly penetrate plate. The main problem for any mounted knight was his horse. Bring the horse down on an armoured knight and he ended fairly squashed and broken from the 1.5 ton beast that fell onto him in its death throws, or it trapped him completely making him an easy target for a knife to the eye. The Scots got the idea that the way to counter the threat of the longbow was to go on foot in full plate. That effectively negated the archer as a real threat (apart from extremely lucky shots). Of course, you'd still need to be a better army than the one you were facing which is where the Scots tended to fail against the English. Not that they didn't have their victories, but in the end the odds were just too steep to overcome.

No, but the warhorse was about the size of a Shire horse, the largest of which was 1.5 tons, and then there's all the tack and barding to take into account as well, but the effect of a 1.5 ton horse compared to a 1 ton horse is likely to be inconsequential as far as how squashed the knight would end up, especially if you take into account that this would happen at full gallop............

Horses are heavy, especially steeds. How heavy depends on the exact horsie but meh thats a detail. What you don't want is one falling or stepping on top of you as it hurts and if aimed properly breaks bones easily.

I am missing the crossbow in this list... Crossbows had different kinds of benefits compared to the regular bows. Seeing as its easier to master then a regular bow... why is it not included? It might be lacking the stopping power and it might be harder to make but still.... I'd prefer a crossbow over a regular bow... seeing as most of my body strenght is in my legs and not my arms...

I've tried shooting bows and arrows even with decent trainers but I still failed and mostly hit the ceiling of the indoor range...

The trouble with a crossbow is that while it has greater range, by the time you've fired once and reloaded, the longbow archer has sent 6 to 10 arrows at you.

Crossbow isn't in the list because any half-descent archer despises those things.

Bow is not as clumsy and unwieldy as the crossbow. An elegant weapon for a more civilised age. Ok, forget that last part.

I think that in the club I'm in there is a rule that forbids any crossbow from entering the shooting range. Not that many people actually want to have a crossbow. The most extreme thing I have seen as an archer is a ex police officer turning up at our outdoor range with a 9 mm pistol.

Besides, this thread was inspired by the katana thread. Perhaps we should make a dedicated archery thread instead?
