I surely don't have that need, and if I am roleplaying "baddie-type" characters, it's extremely easy for me to use other words and get the same message and image across.

I don't see the need in having to play internet white knight, like you perhaps. Space is harsh, my character is harsh. I don't see a reason to talk around things I can get across with the actual word. I'm not saying I'm spouting b's, f's and c's all over the place. I'm talking within reason, it's still a multiplayer game after all.

It's because it's ever apparent that those who wish to RP using those words are the types that'd wish they had the cojones to act like that in real life but knowing full well they'd get served a tasty knuckle sandwich if they did. So they use the safe distance and the anonymity of the internet as their outlet instead. A pitiful display, really.

Are you actually for real? I'd never go up to people inRL and just start smacking them, not because I couldn't, but because I have zero reason to. Disco is a roleplay environment, we choose to create characters who act different than ourselves. That's what makes it fun. I couldn't be a badass member of a space-navy in real life now, could I ?

It's the very reason why we play video games, not to get a boner about how I'm free to insult people in a game, but to get away from everyday-life.

Seems like a perspective issue. Since there are those idiots who DO infact use the anonymity but then Korny who doesn't.
And since it was in character not OOC it makes me wonder.. Why would you think it was an insult towards the other person playing?

Don't think that everybody has to be this way either.
Characters are different, it's a damn roleplay environment..

Pretty much.

It is indeed a multiplayer game, that's why you have to respect your fellow player and the general code of conduct in terms of how we speak and what words we use.

Really not that hard.

Hi Anaximander. You and I often disagree, but this has to be the single most mindless thing you've ever said... well... ever.

Lets think of it like this. Everyone playing this game is an actor on a stage. When actors are on a stage, they are often pretending to be someone else. They are playing a character. Lets imagine the actor in question is the most polite man on earth who would never say any of those nasty horrible evil little words that everyone hates so much.

That actor is on stage pretending to be someone he is not. He is pretending to be an awful human, one who swears a lot and is abusive to people.

Is the actor doing that because that is how they want to behave in real life, but doesn't have the balls to actually do so? Hell no. That actor is behaving like that on stage because that is what the character is like. Not him... It has nothing to do with the actor... it is just the character. In the interests of making fiction, the actor behaves in a way he wouldn't normally behave.

This has nothing to do with some strange misplaced wish to be an arsehole, it has nothing to do with a secret desire to be nasty to people... It is just fiction. Nothing more.

If the actor was only playing that character because secretly he wanted to be that character, he would be a crappy actor, and the performance would have very little depth due to the indvidual being far too invested in it to see how it slots into the fiction as a whole.

It is all acting. It is all fiction. Don't read any more into it than that.

I would also suggest your little paragraph there is far more offensive than calling someone a bitch, even if it doesn't get sweary. Around theatres, the people who get served knuckle sandwiches are those who cannot differentiate between people and characters, and who start to believe that an actor is the character they are playing.

The greatest respect you can give an actor is to appreciate that the character is not him. You have failed to do this.

Hey Joe (pun intended).

Can I "go on stage" and play a space nazi? No?

We have general rules of conduct that serve the players and the community rather than the RP atmosphere (which again I hardly see enriched by having a bunch of tweens flying around talking foul like stereotypical sailors).

Don't we have space nazi's already though?

EDIT: Also, there's a HUGE difference between going around and roleplaying as Hitler, and going round roleplaying as someone who swears.

Yes, the difference is who exactly you offend. If you ask me, it'd be better and simpler just not to offend anybody and use that tiny bit of energy and ingenuity required to work around that. We all do that in our civil lives without problems anyways, why is that such a big challenge on the internet?

I'm inclined to agree that we don't need them.

I'm sorry, but 13 is stil a tad young to be dropping f bombs in my eyes. Kids that age don't need to swear. Yes, I remember being that old, and yes I swore....but I'm certain some of my classmates at that age didn't.

Not every 13 yr old is a foulmouthed little gangsta, and I would rather they not be introduced to it here....I understand they'll learn it sometime and all that, but why here?

It's all quite negative in the end really. It isn't necessary, and it will barely make a difference. Swear on skype or at work like I do.
