The Next Great Starship is a modding competition series where groups of up to three Citizens team up and combine their talents to design, model, and rig a spaceship.

Whether or not you participate, subscribe to RSI’s YouTube channel to watch the drama unfold and see who can build Star Citizen’s Next Great Starship.

GRAND PRIZE:

$30,000 in cash for the team members. Your Great Starship is included in Star Citizen and each member of your team receives the first production models off the press! As well as; Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suite, Maya Premium and one high-end AMD based system with Radeon R9 290X (for each team member).

Registration opens October 31st and ends on December 31st 2013.

Creating ultra-detailed spaceships is the heart of Star Citizen’s development.

From concept to final texturing, a ship can take teams of expert designers months to create;
the level of graphical fidelity and detail that have become hallmarks of the Star Citizen universe. Now Chris Roberts and his team of visual designers are looking to the community for the next great team of ship designs.

16 Finalist teams exit one by one until there is one Grand Prize winner honored with the addition of their spaceship into Chris Roberts’ new space epic, Star Citizen. Not to mention a $30,000 cash prize, a swag of other goodies and the first winning ships off the production press for each team members’ Hangar!

These sixteen teams of finalists will have to conceptualize, design, model, animate and rig their model while submitting their progress for weekly review by a panel of science fiction’s leading concept artists, designers and celebrities, along with the man himself, Chris Roberts.

Each successful challenge, takes you one step closer to the grand prize. Failure means you go ‘home’. In the end, the last two teams will be flown to Los Angeles to compete live in front of the judges and the community on June 8 2014, for the grand prize: $30,000, their ship incorporated into the Star Citizen universe, cool swag, and the title of...

The Next Great Starship.

To join the contest you will need A team of up to 3 people including yourself. You will be tested on Concept, Design, 3D realization and Game integration. For that you will need to master CryEngine 3 which you can download for free at CryTek.

Teams will be allowed to register from October 31st to December 31st 2013, and will need to attach a 3-4 minute video to their application before registrations close.

I am really amused why none commented this so far. There are a lot of people around that can make perfect ships.

Because I assume most people that Mod for Freelancer don't work much with the Cryengine.

Neither are our models in any way as complicated as those of Star Citizen.

Yeah, for starters, they have moving, animated parts.

That's a little bit different.





That said, I would try it if I was any good at modelling. Sad

I feel very strongly that the artists of this community are up to the task of creating a product that will stand up to SC's level of quality.

heh did you read their official rules that should be signed with all your personal data to be accepted? also your registration could be easily rejected

on the other note, making an AAA content is somewhat for not those from FL community

Id say my skills are very poor compared to SC level, not sure if there's more than me that can bash his head and make something that he never did Big Grin

imho this contest is like h4h4h4 you wont ever create anything similar but still... that's what I feel, but who cares Tongue

If a few folks got their heads together, sure. But I doubt you can motivate the people with the neccesary skillset (IE one modeler to make the basic shapes. A texturer to make and fit the textures. Someone with an understanding on how animations work within that engine to animate the model. Probably someone to make VFXes for the engines and lights if those aren't standard. Someone to handle sounds if those aren't standard).

It requires cooperation and motivation. Also, Saronsen: Freelancer supports simple animations - wings shifting for cruise flight, or continuous rotating or sliding parts such as you see on some stations are relatively easy to do.

I agree with the MD here. While, sure thing it is possible, it is many times more complicated and higher quality than Disco ever seen.

I'd say it is like comparing the level of skills and material base needed to build up a homemade Gyrobee and a corporate aircraft.

The ship in my sig is another good example of where the bar rests in terms of quality.

It's interesting as it raises the question concerning how private servers in the future might not need to rely on CIG assets and lean on "home brew" creations instead. At this point the kind of quality that one expects to fit into the game is miles beyond what the common hobbyist is capable of.

So if you wanted to make some kind of proto Disco server in the future the LN is going to be flying Hornets, the Junkers Drake kit and so on. It's going to be troublesome as hell for you to break out of that mold!

Also, AD, I was being tremendously sarcastic. I believe, sir, that you are guilty of getting high on your own supply.
