Our mod has been stolen

after reading the first post i instantly rememberd of a recent thought i had with another game and a clan...

i so wanna kick them in their neither-regions with a metal toe-cap boots!...oh wait.....they havent got any otherwise they would of done the decent thing and asked you guys to use your hard work on their server!

isnt there any copyright you can put into the files the next time you update it so that they have to go through some page that says "copyrighted by the Discovery mod team" or something and that cannot be changed?

It's not related to nationality. They are Russians, sure; but most Russian modders do respect others' rights, like everyone else.

I only found out about this mod because I'm Russian, that's true, cause if the site wasn't in Russian it would be impossible to guess. Say, someone could make similar thing in Chinese, but no one of us would understand unless they start to promote it widely on English resources.

don't worry about someone copying the Discovery Mod in chinese..because i am watching it..and if you want to understand it..fine..i will translate it to you..=)

i tried putting that thread through Altavista's translator but i was left thinking "my brain is fried because i do not understand one word they are saying...oh except for that one (Discovery)"

Mods cannot be copyrighted, most surely not for Freelancer (don't know about other games). Reynen once tried to copyright TNG, but he did it only for a model package I think and some other additions, not for the mod as a whole.

Patent is a right for an invention, not a copyright. There's nothing in common between patents and modification design. As for copyright, I already answered.

Models (3d mesh and texture) don't need any copyright as far as I know. They are property of the owner from the moment they are created.

Rightio guys, enough of the Charles Bronson talk.... it's getting old.

I think the best thing we, as dedicated Discovery community, can do is keep our eyes open. If we see this piece of s**t mod being promoted, uploaded or described on some site, then:

1. Let Igiss know,
2. Politely let the site admins know it's a stolen and inferior copy,
3. All of the above

A special appeal to the other-language speakers among us, like X-Lancer here, who can keep an eye on non-English sites.

The absolute worst thing you can do, is go and deride this mod on other sites and forums. That will only encourage people to "take a look".

Only together can we stamp out this travesty, and see it scooped up and thrown in the cesspit where it belongs.

Please excuse me if this has been mentioned before (dont have time to read through half the pages on this thread) but would it be possible to take out a copyleft on the mod? I'm assuming everyone knows what a copyright is, a copyleft is basically the exact opposite. It makes it illegal for anyone to claim ownership or take out a copyright on it, but allows free use and any modifications you like to be made on it. It's basically a legal way of saying "this is EVERYONES. not yours"

I CAN NOT believe that someone would have the guts to steal Discovery 4.84, modify it slightly, and then make it into there own server.

Heres what i think they deserve for this:
(I'm not sure if i would really do this, but i might aswell post it) We get as many people as possible to go on there and learn some slogans in Russian and then just keep posting on there forum and server something like "You stole Discovery!" in russian.
I think they should also deserved to get sued as it is copyright of Igiss.
