Take a look at Ground Control 2 - not the biggest game, but it's all about tactics. And, well, control

Dune 2000, it still rocks. Played it on PS, and then on PC.
And, I say, that Rome TW actualy is good. If you like sci-fi RTS like RTW, try SW Empire at war Force of Corruption, and play galactic conquest for rebelion on high diff.
If you want to try something greater, modification for SW FoC- Republic at war mod. Nr 4-5 on Moddb in last year. Link to Moddb
However, this mod can requer some performance of your PC...
Maybe try anno 1503, whilst it lacks multiplayer you can actually get into decent strategy mode if you go for a never ending game and decide to decimate your enemies. Then again, it is also a big citybuilder. Same goes for anno 1404 but they took the combat out of it mostly.

One RTS that I like is supreme commander, and better than that supreme commander forged alliance (supreme commander 2 is lame in my opinion). They have huge maps, lots of units as well such as arty, shields and tanks etc.
if you got supreme commander forged alliance then i would also recommend a program called 'forged alliance forever' as the online community for it only exists there - apart from the occasional game on steam.

Best strategy game ever. Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 are good, but lack the chess likes simplicity that make the original so damn good and broad in strategy for Player vs Player (use gameranger).
Well, looking into Rome Total War a bit more (and reading comparisons between it and Medieval 2), I decided to actually get that as soon as I get around to doing it.
But there are some games mentioned here that I'll look into yet as well.
