I have a new laptop...I need internet. I need it in my room, but I can't wire internet there, so i decided to go to wireless, as its not for gaming, just encyclopedia, Google...ect...ect.

Is there an adapter I can plug into a spare port on my router? Does something like that exist? Can I buy a PCI wireless card and put it in my computer to get wireless?

Cheers:cool:

Not sure what you mean by spare port on your router...I am using a wireless USB adapter right now on my desktop (cause I am too lazy to plug it into the router about 2 or 3 feet away..) Costed me somewhere between $10.00 to $20.00. Dunno what the currency you use there is...but this ain't much. Works great. They make external and internal. Pick your poison..
EDIT: You have a laptop. Doh. You can use a PCI card or a USB one. Your choice.

While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack

What I mean by spare port on router is...

Is there a Wireless USB type device, I can plug directly into the router in the RJ45 port thingy....?
I don't have a wireless router, but my laptop has wireless built in...So i can put a USB stick into my desktop and get internet on my laptop?

Cheers:cool:

As in country?

I'm in New Zealand...If thats what you ment?

Otehrwise...My mothers computer is downstairs with the router, and Im upstairs above our kitchen in my room. My desktop is upstairs in the lounge. My laptop is about 20 meters away from my desktop in the lounge, and my room has to be a 40 meter walking distance to the downstairs computer? I'm not sure how to judge it.

If I didn't answer your question, I didn't understand it in the first place:P

Cheers:cool:

just seeing what services you could be on...umm is ther any way you can get closer? if not try getting a better external antenna. it helped with my connection. as far as i know there is no 'extra port' that you can put on a router. though i dont quite get what you mean by that

err...I don't even have wireless yet...Im discussing the options I have...

I need to get it. What would be the best solution?

Does the fact the wireless needing to go through a wooden floor matter?

You could buy a wireless extender I think...it would hook up to your router via ethernet...ill check on it

EDIT: OK OK i got it ...its a Wireless Access Point...thats what you need

Thats a tad to expensive.

But if my desktop had one of those USB wireless pens, could I pick the wireless connection from that USB stick through my built in wireless receiver on my laptop?

EDIT:

Never mind I had a read of what It said in the posten link. Self explanatory. Just the above question;)

well...i think if you have the USB wireless pen on a PC that is hard wired you might be able to get net through an ad hoc network...but im not 100% sure on that one as that might just produce a network between your two computers only and not include the network with the net.
