The "They became furries in an experiment" or "They come from the furry galaxy 5 sectors away!" are even more cringe worthy BS. It's an utter shame to see people shoe-horn this kind of cheap roleplay into Discovery.

You know, if people want to take furries in disco so seriously, maybe we should incorporate a new faction of furry hunters. Instead of just recycling the phantom tech and turning it into the Etherium, we should give it to this new cult of 'furry hunters' who are religiously devoted to hunting furries all over Sirius.

For me, the main thing that separates good characters from bad ones is the presence of weakness and drawbacks. I don't mind superpowers or furries or whatever else, as long as there's some kind of drawback. For example, a furry is quite likely to experience prejudice, racism and alienation in a society dominated by humans (much like black people in white dominated societies for example). This wouldn't be a footnote in the character's development, but a major feature in their personality, guiding principles and general beliefs.

The same goes for characters with superpowers. Sure, fine, I don't mind a bit of telekinesis or lasers shooting out of eyes, but it should have drawbacks. Headaches, intense concentration, fatigue... plenty of options. People just don't think about the weaknesses of their characters.

Remember even somebody like Superman, who shoots lasers out of his eyes, can survive in space, has super strength, can fly and many other things, has a weakness. Super characters can be really cool.

I've got no problem with any kind of RP conceptually. It's the execution that matters, and in 98% of cases including in my opinion, all of the furry characters belonging to SMI, it's the execution that's severely wanting.

And it's fine for faction leaders to pass judgment on your RP. There will always be people who like it and accept it and people who do not. Their opinion is as valid as yours... sometimes more so, if you're asking to play in their faction. They don't have to make concessions if they don't want to, or if their memberbase consists of people hostile to that idea.

The following is my take as a player, so read it as the gray it's written in:

Even though no one's stopping you from playing a character which in one way or another conflicts with or does not follow the Discovery lore and canon, it comes with the drawback that you can't "force" your character on others, and if your character happens to be a non-canon concept like a furry, people have the right to choose for themselves whether they want to acknowledge your character or not. Trying to force people to treat your character as they would treat a normal character is nothing but outright powergaming, as your character is in fact not a normal character.

Our server goes rather easy on non-canon characters, as there are no strict rules enforced against them, and admins have stepped in only in a very few occasions when that type of roleplay was pushed way too far. The official lore of the mod, however, has a more strict attitude toward the whole thing, so just because something is not hammered down on the spot by the server admins does not make it part of the official lore, and long as something is not acknowledged as part of the official lore, people have every right to treat it however they see fit, and based on nothing but their personal opinion of it.

For the sake of providing an example other than a furry character (even though that's most likely why you posted this thread anyways) - Take a a male character applying for a GC faction. It somewhat conflicts the lore of that faction, but neither the owner of that character nor leaders of that faction would receive a sanction if the character is accepted and starts flying with GC tag (there were, in fact, two male Chrysanthemums characters with extensive backgrounds. One was even part of the official [GC] back in the day), however, if the faction decides to deny the application on the sole basis of the character being male, the player has no right to complain, as he was going against the lore of the faction and the leaders of the group had every right to refuse to acknowledge it.

If you want others to accept your roleplay, accept theirs. If you're a half-human half-somethingsomething then expect people to be xenophobic towards you. From what I've seen from you all your characters seem to be accepted in society even though they're not human and that has always bugged me.
