It isn't really realistic.
In real life, if you send someone to the hospital, you don't pay for the cures of the poor taffer.
Ok, bad, weird, just wrong example which can only come from an unhealthy mind like mine, but you should understand what it means.
Not to mention it actually would make people more aggressive and trigger-happy. If they get half a million each time they kill someone...

THATS IT ITS OVER
Nah, although I understand where the idea is coming from, its generally accepted already that ships are 'replaced' after a pvp death by a new ship or repaired old one. Aannnndd you already buy back ammo and botts. Most people RP that they're escape pods were picked up and made it back to base. I like how it can rp'd around a bit. Allows for some creativity when retelling a story of an encounter. Usually, if it comes up in discussion, I rp that my ship, being critically damaged, was towed back and repaired.
If you want to start worrying about making this game more realistic, how about making it so an NPC fighter can't send a battleship or large transport twirling around in every which direction when it bumps into them.
Or larger planets and stars, like wayyy larger. So battles can happen in the skies over a planet, down nice and low, but still not too low to cause destruction. I always felt that the celestial objects and stations could be a bit more spaced out to use up some of the volume each system has. These things interest me more when it comes to realism than the pvp death system.

We already have such for the wild cloaks, which require a powercell, costing 4 millions (used to be 1 million before), to run their cloak. So every time they die. They got to buy a new one.
That combined with ammo costs, gets you to +5 millions each death. I for example "lost" already hundreds of millions with that.

GG, please continue. Sarcasm aside, are you drunk?
This.
There are already enough people who do anything in order to not lose a fight. This will just make people more dire, bitter and would further discourage people from playing here. (From both ends, really).

The funny thing is flying a battleship costs about as much as flying a bomber ...
AMAGAD AMAGAD, HOLY HELL, NOOOONONONO FINAL NAIIIIIL!!!!
I NEED TO TRADE 2 MINUTES MORE PER DEATH, HELL NO
FINAL NAIL, OMG!
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people? This isn't to discourage PvP, it is to encourage trading. Making money is already god damn easy. It's only rough at the beggining, so for new guys i'd say civvy shuttle and freighter are to be excempt from this kind of fee. Result: People can trade in a few stuff without having to lose cash when blown up.

Like a bunch of crybabies, seriously. Crying like it couldn't be developed in a way not to be a deterrent for PvP and still be a money sink at the same time.
Different versions (for each ship class with different prices) of that fuel canister thing would be interesting though.
Well snake i know what you mean.. Crossfire for example have a plugin that when someone comes online with a ship which has a bounty on its head its shown in the game. Payouts and such go by it as well. It might simplefy the bounty boards a lot. Giving the factions/players a command to put bounties on people their head. something like
/bounty <name> <amount> <how many times> <reason>
it would be an idea to simplefy and resurrect the bhg faction. No offence but i have never seen it active during my time in here.
And for the complaining people for lack of money.. Might be some time to invest into ore trading? I i made a day 500 to 700 millions (depending on my free time then) im sure you all can do the same.

UNLEASH THE CAPS RAGE!!1!one!!
Adding some penalty on death, like proposed in the OP won't make people who do not trade (like me) to suddenly start trading. The reason is we already have more than enough money. Actually, the only moneysink for me is buying new ships every once in a while. Whether I have to pay 0.5M (ammo) or 1M (ammo + penalty) is utterly insignificant.
The people who are going to be affected are new players who don't have much money. And they are already actively trading to buy bigger transports or shiny caps.
The only way to "fix" this is to do server wipe. Probably not an option.
Anyway, the easiest way to implement penalty on death is to increase regen cost up to about 3000 credits per piece.
