Ok, there are many great ships in Discovery, but what do you do if you want to stick with a Super Heavy Fighter (henceforth SHF) and do not want a capital ship? There really are VERY few options, where are all the SHFs that cost 10 mil+? 100 mil+? It is possible to make SHFs worth paying that price for that do not outclass capital ships, and that are still balanced, so why not? It would be really cool. (BTW I do know there are a few options, but they are almost nonexistent)
SHF are extremely unpopular. Being a big target, while suposedly performing like a fighter, people would prefer a gunboat to the SHF. I know of a few user of SHF, and its mostly for RP purpose.
Xing's right. SHF's are mostly for RP purposes not as a VHF/Gunboat alternative.
I myself fly the Pioneer, a Spatial used as my personal exploring vessel. I will just take her out, fill the meager hold, and buzz around Sirius seeing the sights.
Others use it as they're personal vessel as well. No one...and I believe NO ONE, would willingly take one into PvP. it's a big, ungainly, floating target.
Of course no one uses SHF, why the heck would they? There aren't any worth having! That is precisly why I have made this proposal, it is unrealistic for almost everyone to be flying gunboats and capital ships. Lets make some good, useful, expensive SHFs and bring the realism of RP back to Discovery.
personally, i have tried the somtaav SHF - as a bomber substitute. it does OK with its 350 bats / bots - meaning it can survive a lot longer against capships than a bomber. its not much bigger than a bomber and can dodge just as fine - mind, the torp launcher is on its roof - and is stripped quickly - so you d rather run out of weapons before you run out of bats / bots.
i never tried the spatial, so no idea there. the marsflier is a nice ship, cause its very unique - but it has no torp slot and when you put "normal" weapons onto it, it looks utterly stupid, cause the weapon models look about as good on it as a nomad cap turret on a BHG gunship ( like a bright blue jellyfish ).
the problem is that SHF do not fill up a niche. they are slow, big and - as a whole costly. - that is due to the fact that they rely on lvl10 fighter shields that are pierced quickly, - so they take a lot of hull hits. they cannot outturn heavy or light fighters - or even VHFs - and a lot of bombers are even quicker than SHFs ( a GREAT problem there - a bomber should never out turn any SHF ) - i daresay, there are even gunboats out ( maybe BHG gunship ) that turn at the same speed.
i think, they were intended to be "light gunboats" but turned to super heavy fighters. - especially since bombers and gunboats themselves fulfil the role of "light gunboats" now anyway. if SHFs had anything unique, it would make them worth purchasing. ( maybe 10 front lvl10 weapons - but thats overkill when it comes to jousting )
so it leaves the bitter taste of an allmost useless shipclass that cannot really be put to a good use. but yes - from a RP point of view, they should be fighters with "room" to live in when you spend much time in space.
Well as long as everyone is brings VHFs into this, lets talk about them for a sec... There is just as small of a selection there, I mean once you get something like the Viper (done by me in just a few hours, faster by some people) there is almost no where else to go, the other VHFs above it are so insubstantial that it just isn't worth the money... So why don't we have more of those as well? The ship selection in Discovery is surprisingly small for how big of a mod it is.
it never felt like there are not enough of them out there. i don t know other custom mods - but in disco, its mostly about the "realism" of ships around. so, while it might add up features to give each faction like 10 different fighters or 100 civilian "free for all" ships. - it doesn t add to the atmosphere of the universe, doesn t make me believe it more.
most shipbuilding factions do have their share on fighter designs now, some of them got their Mk II versions, which - if possible - should differentiate a little from the classic VHF chassis.
but when its about the number of "new" ships, i am more for fewer ships that have a purpose than many that only look nice on a feature list but don t really fit in. - anyway, the mod is growing with each update, and there are only few ships declared to be obsolete.
all in all, there is quite a vast amount of ships to choose from - for those factions that can choose inRP. factions that do not have a shipbuilding facility must either beg for a ship from a faction that is allied and has the ability - or rely on the civilian line. - anyway, even smaller factions have the choice between many fighters.
eg. gaians : VHFs ---> eagle, stinger, kushan VHF, taiidan VHF, sabre ( basicly possible as a borderworld design ), titan ( if you grovel in the dust before the corsairs ), raven talon, viper 1, viper 2, maybe dragon/chimaera ( kusari is quite friendly with gaians ) - and i think there are many more.
you see there are a lot of fighters to choose from, even when you re in a non ship building faction.
I know what your saying Jinx, the thing is there are a lot of VHFs but they are all almost identical. I mean what's the point of buying a Gaian VHF and then turning around and buying a Kusari VHF with the exact same weapon/shield mounts, and exact same (or extremely close) hull strength? Just because there are lots of them doesn't mean they are all unique, many of them feel like the same ship just in a different wrapper.
If SHFs get 24k shield (lvl 6 freighter) and extra CD only slot....like I have been screaming for lately.... they will be nice...
as patrol ship against smuggling and/or pirating ships.
But Igiss said that he doesn't want many (or any?) more SHFs to be added after the Rheinland one.
-----------------------------
about VHFs... you are so wrong!!!!!!!
Try flying them first.. while on paper they might look exactly the same... their turning rate, staffing and size is vastly different. And that makes a difference in combat .
Igiss says: Martin, you give them a finger, they bite off your arm.
