If you have an nvidia graphics card (and the driver) you can enhance the game's appearance with for example (massive amounts of) anti-aliasing.

Oh yes, HD planets look so amazing.

I don't think all planets are retextured though, for example, Honshu looks exactly the same to me, but Miura and New York look sexy as heck.
