Why do guns, who are mounted on the ship, and visible from the outside, take cargo space that is meant for cargo storage which is in the ship?
Same goes for CD, mines, CM and such. It doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, it does not if they are mounted. It would make perfect sense if they would take space when unmounted.

Weapons, regardless of where on the ship they are, still contribute to the total ship mass.
Makes perfect sense to me.

@up
Yes, but mass is a lot more negligible in space.

You still have to accelerate/decelerate said mass. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to make ship handling dependent of the equipment/cargo.

Besides, the turret itself may be considered only part of the weapon with extra equipment inside the ship that is needed to transfer energy from the power core. (Or something like that)

Even when mounted they take cargo space. Not sure for snubs, but for transports + it's 100%.

Codenames take 1 cargo unit.

Because it was en easier job to make them take cargo space then to make every transport carrying guns slower in thrustering, turning, crusing and so on.

Exactly, right thing would be making each transport slower, but as you said it's impossible to do it, it's just made so that guns take space, easier to do. And no, carrying mounted guns ON the ship should't take cargo space IN the ship.

Your logic is flawed.

All the machinery/ electronics and the electrical cables to move, operate and power up these weapons don't sit on the outside of the ship but are all internal. Hence they take up space.

Go on a modern warship. For the Weapon Systems most of the machinery and missile storage is all internal and only a small part of the whole system is external.

Your logic is flawed as well.

There is a clear difference between ''cargo hold'' and ''other parts of the ship''. For example: those cables you speak of are not stocked and siting in cargo bay. They run through walls of the ship, through floor and ceiling.

On the other hand cargo bay is meant for ''cargo only'', for commodities. Those cables could only be taking cargo space if they were a commodity to be shipped from one place to another.
