I've tried to kill players with non-codes, and it's like watching water fall of a duck's back. I don't even dent their shields without a good nuke mine, and even after that their armor never wavers.
Look, I'm not here to argue with everyone who's played for years at this. I just need to get to everyone else's level, and if not playing except at server reset times is the way to get up to snuff, then I'll do that.
Honestly, if I were to bet real-life cash on my own performance in fighter PvP, I would use non-code weapons (that is, after SOLARIS and such get hit by the well-deserved nerf bat). Higher projectile speed and efficiency for a mere 300-400 DPS is a good trade-off. You'll want to look up non-codes' stats in FLstat. There are plenty of class 8 weapons that put out more DPS than half the codes in the game.

I get the speed and efficiency piece, but non-codes, esp. class 8 do NOT do direct damage, therefore a mix of tech is necessary to pierce the different shield types. And the DPS point is not true according to the wiki. The top three codenames do north of 2700 hull DPS, whereas the best Class 8 (LR Belial Laser) does 1674 hull DPS. That's a HUGE difference, not 300-400, and the difference in speed and efficiency doesn't compute, its only 100 faster and 300 more energy/sec.
I'm sorry, but unless the Wiki is wrong, there is no substitute. And thus I have to either play a cap ship, gunboat, or just play a transport and hope a pirate doesn't ventilate me. Snubs are right out without codenames.

The wiki is completely outdated and wrong. Get FLStat if you want to judge the effectiveness of weapons for yourself.
In addition, codes these days are largely plasma, meaning they don't do direct damage either. This'll likely be adjusted next update as well, to make them do a form of 'shield-reduced direct damage' that does equally well (or poorly if you prefer) against all shields to avoid making molecular shields overly effective.
Here's an example of what you'd see in FLStat: Class 8 Sunrails deal 2860 DPS. Class 9 (today's codes) KINTANOs deal a "mere" 2793 DPS.
Codes are mostly crap, except the broken ones. I too had the thought that they were superior to the normal guns, but nope. As soon as you get accustomed to PvP, normal guns like flashpoints, dragoons, purple goddesses would offer an easier experience over these codenames (which require quite some aiming, since most of them are 2.00 or 3.03)
EDIT: On topic, just shoot the NPCs that loot your codes. Excals don't have many Maquis ships roaming around you. It should be an easy task.

Hope fully you will find this information helpful.
The order of figures are Hull damage - Shield damage - Range - Speed - RoF - Energy Used.

Firstly, i find this statement a bit ridiculous.
second of all. just buy some. its easier.
What's ridiculous is a player that's been here since 2012 is telling a new player he should buy $45mil or more worth of codename weapons. The excals cost 30mil each from most vendors, so that's even more. Unless you have NO life, there is no way to make that kind of money in this game and actually find enjoyment in it.
Stop trolling this thread, Sabru. I'll wait for some real advice from someone who knows what they're talking about.
Trolling? me? i dont use codies and dont bother with them. i dont bother much with snub pews in the first place, but i digress. So i dont see how im trolling. I'm giving advice from my point of view. Dont want to take it, go right ahead. just dont go all "stop trolling" because you dont like the opinion.
$45M? one large load (or 2 medium loads) of premium scrap gets you that easily and then some. If you are that hard up for money (by which i mean poor) then why are you so focused on codes in the first place.
PVP isnt the be all and end all. PVP is just a part of the server. dont think you have to be some "1337 PVP ace pilot".
also, yeah. Wiki so out of date it's not funny. Use FLStat, tells you all you need to know.
Weeeeell, if we are talking about NPCs: what if we removed CDs from NPCs?
I have been a victim and witness to many ridiculous scenes how bunch of hostile NPCs can wipe out entire wing of smugglers/pirates/militaries, just because of two gunboats spamming with CD. I mean, being in a bomber, fighter or even in gunboat (with CAUs!) in certain systems is a death sentence, because few gunships spawns that will spam you and kill you in no time, because you can't run away (and CMs cannot fool all the CDs from 3 gunships at the same time).
Not that they will - after they spammed you with CDs - start spamming you with razors, cruiser turrets, stuff like that, not only gunboats, but also cruisers and battleships - with no chances to escape.

If I can't get codenames to outfit my ships, I can't compete in any PVP. If I can't compete in PVP, this game has no meaning. Killing NPCs isn't fun, since the mod nerfed them. And every player has maxed out characters at this point. How is a new player supposed to compete, especially if the codenames are not dropping as intended?
Off Topic - Those few lines tell so much about you.
On Topic - It is not gear >> skills. It is the other way around.

Daaaaaaamn... Does this mean that I've been playing this game for more than 3 years totally wrong?
Want some real advice? Quit this "pvp ace or nothing" attitude, quit this "don't troll me with your 2 years of experience" thing, play a bit with FLStat, FLCompanion, and in a few weeks you'll not only have cash for codenames, but for battleships. But keep in mind that shooty-shooty is not everything. And don't use the Wiki.
This thread clearly shows how handless modern players are. Such a disappointment.
But thanks to devs, such people can acquire their own way of living: in caps, hugging docking rings.
