I was just looking at the new and exciting space games: Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, and Elite Dangerous.
None of the above games support a 3rd person hud, and if someone brings it up on the forums, the responses are almost hostile.
Personally, I love 3rd person dogfights -- I think it makes the fight faster and more immersive. (Immersive in the sense that you're forced to focus more)
The common argument against 3rd person view is that it makes the game less immersive. (Immersive in the sense that you "feel" like you're flying a real ship).
I think that if I wanted to feel like I was in a real ship, I would expect it to have fuel, etc., and every shot that penetrates my hull should cripple the system under that shot (if it's an electrical system -- not necessarily mechanical). I'm a control systems engineer, and I know that there are no wasted wires in these machines. If a wire gets cut, things malfunction. All that to say I don't expect the game to be perfectly realistic and I don't need my control scheme to be frustratingly limited in order to feel like I'm in space. [/rant]
I don't expect many dissenters to come from the Freelancer community, but I'm hoping to generate some discussion on the topic anyway.
What do you guys think?
Also, does anyone know of any other open-universe space games with third-person combat?

Good question.
Also if they don't plan to add 3rd person view, how in the world do you fight with caps in it?
Capital ship usage will be devided by roles. At least, it would need two players to operate it: Pilot and Gunner. That what I have heared from person, who have wasted around 3K Euro into SC.

You will never find such complicated combat system anywhere else.
This might be true, for now atleast. The future for Space sim's looks bright as more and more developers look into this genre. We might see one some day
