Hi! I am a fan of the Discovery series and having played the single player campaign and online play many years ago, I did like this game looking back at it. I want to give the game another go after being shown Discovery and how large the active player base is even for the age of the game.
However, one of the problems that I seem to be facing is where to even start when it comes to role playing in a game like this. I would just like to ask how you guys got into the game and what are some tips and suggestions for new players that you have done. The game is already really interesting to me because of the fact that you can work together to have organized systems of many races that keep everything in-tact and can also work with other factions in companionship or against them in hostility that could result in long battles or struggles. Then this mod or version of the game allows the players to change the game in small or large details to how things operate which is something that could be really cool to get into since I am a fan of science fiction and am not opposed to writing or developing different events as they progress.
I understand that you can play this game and see that there is organizations that have specific purposes, but where and how can I get started? Should I start working on a character with background details that fits to whichever group I am wanting to go with? This is a learning experience for me because I haven't really role played prior to Discovery, but again, after knowing a few people that have been into Discovery for a while and them enjoying it.. it looks like it is something that I could get into. Thanks for anyone willing to help out a curious person on a completely new topic for them.

First of all, welcome to the community and game and i hope you enjoy yourself.
Now for the question... i do something like this:

1) pick the faction ID
2) male/female
3) general personality. Evil, caring, adventurous
4) what do you wana do with him?
5) what does he fly? What ship? what is his job?
6) character. like more in depth than the general personality

and i guess pick how he/she looks like aannddd... i dunno depends how far you want to take this. you can go as far as writing about the character or as little as just role playing in game.

I would suggest for a beginner just make an average joe guy in space and practice talking to people and submerging into the game. it is all about getting a feel for the atmosphere and what your guy would do in a situation.

hope that helps i guess.

Basically theater.

There is one very simple way how to start off roleplaying, something a friend of mine once told me.
If you are not really used to it, make a character which is made after an existing one you know. Perhaps your favorite TV or movie character. You know- someone you already know inside out and what would they do at any given situation. Once you get that down, just start tweaking it a bit. "How would they be if they were a bit more X" for example.

And then just sort of roll with it.

Yeah, that seems like a good idea to try to get to know my surroundings so that I can maybe get to know people and get to be know in the game. If I develop a character and go around in the game I could probably make my way into different situations into different groups.
Also, I could maybe play this off as a new person to that area, but I would imagine that different groups control different areas -- how would I go about learning the rules or regulations of said areas? Or would I just play it off clueless as a pilot in a completely new area. Thanks for the help though.

Looks like I should just go with the flow when it comes to role playing. Probably intended since it is entirely based on your imagination and character's potential however you intend or write him to be. Will be floating around the galaxies exploring the many options, thanks.

Protip.

Immersion is key, but remember this: There are many players in Disco, who are not here for the RP or are not able to do so due to a language barrier. Due to this, Disco at times seems a bit chaotic and relaxed, while in truth- it is hardly anything but.

If you want to know more, check this out. This shows a few subtleties about the RP on disco.

Yeah I've heard that it's not always role play so I can't always expect other people to be cooperating 100%, will have to take that into mind if it does come up.
Also thanks for the video, I will watch this when I can! (sun)

Get involved! Getting integrated into the community is a great way to get started. Of course this isn't the easiest things to do when you first start off. Although it's really a goal that you should be pursuing.

Something i've learned over my time here.. Factions are great. Only if you're willing to become one of the more active members of them. You have to put a lot of work into them for your name to finally start to show around the place, even internally in the faction. Try not to join a group which is overpopulated, but find a little faction that interests you in the corner of space which you can do your part, and draw attention to yourself.

Honestly, drawing attention to yourself is probably one of the keys. Don't be annoying and all of that, but making a name for yourself by (politely perhaps?) butting into conversations inRP ingame does start to have people curious on who you are.

Good luck, i'm glad to see how interested you are.

what i used to do to practice was (back when planet manhattan was full of people) i would just go there and inRP talk to them and just practice on the spot conversations.
I would make different things like for example a bottlenose with 2 pilots (brother/sister) or like an LPI snub is also really good for just talking to civilians and cops both. I'd go actually for the cop option for beginners because it is familiar to pretty much everyone.

(:

But yeah, first I'd say make a character that's just designed for talking. Researcher, author, spy, news reporter, something like that.
