I think they reintroduced in a trial phase recently and yeah it is annoying.

EDIT: At least I thought they did but can't seem to find the post so no clue

There is. It was accidentally reintroduced.

And yes, please... remove it. It makes cooperative mining actions tedious to a degree that I do not feel like logging for them. It's stupid.
