Heavy carriers are currently, simply put, useless. They do have a great deal of light turrets, but their size still makes them easy targets for bombers. If you ever see me flying a heavy carrier, that is because I'm bored and want a good challenge by flying an underpowered ship.

Light carriers are, on the contrary, very useful as light battleships with more secondary turrets. If fact, the Geb, the Order assault carrier, is the ship I would use first if I was hunting for blue messages in the Omicrons. If I ever bought a ship for pews in Rheinland, it would be an Elbe. But this is not the subject.

Carriers, if paired with docking bays, should have a use. If you dock on a player ship, it doesn't count as PvP death. I think a snub that docks should be able to buy nanobots, shield batteries and ammunition from the carrier's stock. That means that if the carrier had been badly damaged and it repaired itself, there would be no nanobots available. Other ships with docking bays would not be able to do this, only carriers (if the game engine allows it).
This might seem slightly OP at the first glance, but in case light carriers are nerfed, all carriers will be weaker than any battleships. All you'd have to do to get rid of a fighter repairing platform is to bring a battleship or a pair of cruisers. Stone, paper, scissors.
An organized bomber fleet with a carrier will, however, have an advantage over an organized bomber/fighter fleet with a battleship, which is the point. Like in the Pacific 1941--1945. A carrier should be as useless as it is alone, but the ultimate weapon in a team.

I'm for either this, or for turning heavy/light carriers into heavy/light battleships or battlecruisers, depending on which the navy in question lacks.

What are your thoughts?

Still awaiting Alley's Carrier update though, then they will be used 10000000000 times more than now C:

I don't think this should be limited to just carriers, but all ships that can use docking modules.

Otherwise, I love the idea. In fact, maybe make it so that they don't drain on the capital ships (or transport ships) regens, but can purchase new regens on the temporary base entry (think of them as snub-specific regens inRP).

Actually, having both Carriers and Battleships in game kinda misses the points, since Battleships had the more Assault Carrier role in the vanillia. I can agree that Carrier has more docking bays and can be used to hold up to 4-5 vessels at the same time according to the in-game mechanics.

There's the risk that you can explode whilst trying to dock, as the pilot needs to type /allowdock and to also stop moving. However I do agree, an infinite regen pool will probably be a bad idea. Perhaps add an ammo commodity called snub regens?

I never really understood difference between carriers, battlesips and dreadnoughts. Sure, carriers have more secondaries and less heavies which makes them even more useless than BSs, but other than that the idea of "swarming the enemy with loads of bombers and fighters that launched from the carrier" never lived inRP. Concerning regens thing, the idea is okay but as stated above the unlimited botfeeed possiblity would be a problem. If it would be implemented, battleships and dreadnoughts should get this option too.

But then everyone would rather fly battleships and dreadnoughts than carriers and carriers would be relatively as useless as they are now. A battleship/dreadnought would have everything a carrier does, with addition of more heavy turrets, more armour and smaller size (or even more armour instead). Remember, you only need 1 docking bay installed to repair your snubs, so a carrier's superiority in their number doesn't matter. The snubs aren't all getting damaged at once.

I know of Alley's carrier update and I am looking forward to it. But I think we should discuss this a little bit further before it is out. Better than after.
