When missiles are unavoidable means of killing LFs, that means they're going to be even better at hammering down VHFs. This probably means that they're objectively overpowered and require nerfs. Then we're back to unkillable LFs.
Any LF that runs into a mine while deshielded has done something horribly wrong. Ships are not balanced around suboptimal use, since then any agile but flimsy fighter could be considered "bad" because a below-average pilot might not use its agility to its fullest to compensate for the ship's weaknesses. Anyways, it's pretty difficult to lose your shields in a Liberator to begin with, really.
No more torps, no missiles. No pls. Especially not on light fighters...
Isn't part of the problem that LF's vary so greatly? There's the Hussar/Liberator "particle" type ships, then there are larger LF's. Maybe add some wings to the tiniest ships so a similar balance can be achieved across the board?
At any rate, I agree that LF's should be dedicated interceptors. Maybe give them a built-in cloak disruptor? Long range guns would be sweet for piracy / intercepting and gunning down transports. LF's shouldn't be duelling ships either, so don't up the damage any more.
I think the problem primarily stems from the fact that most of us have no clue how to fly LF's. We fly them like VHF's, joust like morons and die to mines and instantly think "oh lol such bad shippie" rather than think "oh wow, looks like I need some practice in this boat".

This. Most of us can't bother with practice because that kind of ship requires alot of patience, concentration and training while having very low firepower compared to other classes.
Well anyway, to the balance devs who gave us that brief bump, thanks anyway.
If anything, an attempt was made and it was better than not doing anything. Feel free to make more tests like that more often, was kinda fun to see more people fly ships that aren't a VHF.

Well if we could give it a "secondary" role, like having a cloak disruptor by default, it would be great. Then you don't have to be a good PVP'er to be useful in a LF.
Another idea, and I don't know if this is possible, but maybe make LF's able to create "bubbles" like in Eve Online? A sphere within which cruise doesn't work for any ships, so you have to kill the LF or make it go away before you can run.

Why you rest can't see LFs might be a way to keep new players? Give LFs some specific role, so scrubs can fly them, stay alive few minutes longer, learn some teamwork and feel useful. We are simply pushing them away from the game. Some we force to just buy caps.
You pros can live without LFs, as you do already. Use HFs, VHFs, SHFs...
Kinda like Bombers worst nightmare but VHF's pets. That could work as Interceptor. The Question is though how would you balance it? To make LF's more deadly to Bombers than VHF.
OR equal with HF's but still deadlier to Bombers, but also able to fight a VHF (hence why equal with a Heavy Fighter).
You're prolly gonna say that then the HF's will be useless. Considering the current Energy Consumption on LFs... I hardly doubt it. LF's energy drain is horrible, so people will still go for HF, but use the LF as a different purpose now.
LF are useless right now, because they can be easily killed by a skilled VHF/HF fighter. Hell, they can be take down by literally everything with little skill and luck.
If it was for me, I'd make something that I came across on the Paralyzer's infocard, as they are said to drain energy of the ship (not sure about it though).
So:
Why not to make LF-only gun or missiles that would drain your energy violently?
This way, LF would be pretty useful in disabling ships and e.g LPI would finally make use of their symbolic Liberators.
