On a none-floody note, that's got me seriously wondering. How fast are furry chars in disco meant to age anyway, since all disco furries are mostly splicers? This would create an interesting contrast of experience between somebody, who, say, is biologically in their forties, but has only been around for fifteen years. Would their psychological age rise accordingly?

Edit: Now I'm wondering if I should join the furry posting bandwagon and take that forum ban like a bauss. Yeah, probably not.

On a more serious note, we come to the problem of culture and recognition "what does it mean to be adult".

A 12 years old from country can drive tractor without any problems. I know children who can fly gliders or even fly small planes destined to water crops. But they cannot drive car of course - not because they can't, but because they are allowed to do so. BUT, I know that in many places in the world early teenagers are allowed to drive motorcycles and motorines (fusion of small motorcycle and bike) after they get the license.

Speaking about the other side of the coin for comparison: in the past ages, if woman could bleed, she was already able to give birth. In Poland you are lawfully able to do... certain things after you hit your 15th birthday - not that it would be nowadays widely accepted due to obvious reasons.

So much for being "adult" and having "responsibilites". I know a lot of people around 15/16 that are smarter than some men and women in their 30s.

I've always seen an adult as someone who can survive using the resources around them in that society.


That's... surprisingly complex to do in post-industrial societies, as there are so many more steps to survival, such as paying tax, delivering and receiving post, using the internet, managing debt, which go well beyond actual physical maintenance.

You also have the issue of sexual maturity, which is a cultural and biological minefield. Then you have criminal responsibility, which is an ethics/legal issue. It goes beyond the basic skill of being able to fly a space ship - considering how functionally easy space ships are to fly and navigate IRL, you can teach rocket science to a toddler. You can't cram the peripheral skills of life into a toddler.

I wouldn't consider a Disco character mature until they were 21, personally. Disco is significantly more dangerous than the post-industrial regions of Earth.

Yeah, that's a huge difference between American and European societies.

For some odd reason, you are forced not to drink until 21st birthday (18th in some states), but you are egilible to join army at age 16 (under certain circumstances).

In Europe, you are able to drink on your 18th b-day (excluding e.g. parents giving you small beer), but in certain countries you are able to drink around age of 16. There's also non-alcoholic beer, but that's other matter.

As I said, it would depend. While I agree that is unacceptable to drive battlecruiser as a young pup, there's Kusari in which obviously two of three pretendents are raised in the feudal society. If someone is the only heir, he might be underage. We shouldn't forget a lot of European and Asian kings (princes) made their conquests way before age 15!

This problem could also be present in Corsair or Outcast society, because of culture - especially when Corsairs are rather considered barbaric. To be honest, I agree that age 15 should be minimum for roleplay character - but this statement is made on basis of Polish law.

Overall, we should take note Freelancer was made in the USA, hence all characters in campaign are at least 21 years old. The truth might be pretty different, on the other hand. We have slavery, so it would be pretty obvious these slaves aren't only ones after 21 years old.

It's understandable why the 'Muricans do what they do - Alcohol screws people up. Especially teenagers and early twenty something who drink primarily as an alpha-dominance thing/competitive thing, or to get laid. It's what I and most of my social group used to do as a mid-teen, and it wasn't constructive for us.

In a universe with active, institutionalised slavery with all that entails, I'd still say disco chars should be 21 and up. Obviously they wouldn't be IRL, but this is an under-eighteen forum/server and there's limits to what we can get away with.

I see your point, but I see nothing bad in leading fifthteen years old, as far as roleplay is good. Some teenagers were and are more mature than actual adults. But certain people are more mature because of the circumstances they were raised in.

The question however is still open and will be open, because of different understadment of maturity. In Poland, if you screw something up pretty bad, you can be sentenced as adult at age 15.
