Sup.
So Christmas is coming and I wanted to get my younger siblings something fun for once. Yet at the same time, something their parents can also poke around if they wanted to.

Talked to my old man about it and he decided that, since my little half-sis is doing piano lessons that perhaps a synth would be a good choice.

There are many for sale where I live, but perhaps there is some info that I am missing? My budged for one is around 350$, so I am not looking for an outright cheapo solution. If anyone here has any experience with them, perhaps you can give me a few pointers on what I am looking for.

I would stick to Yamaha. I've used many keyboards, from cheap up to quality ones. I prefer Yamaha in the price range you mentioned. You can get this keyboard for a reasonable price. You get touch response keys, which is a "must have" feature for a piano player. You get a great amount of voices and styles, some of them are shitty as hell, but Yamaha's Grand Piano sounds just amazing. You may get this one too, does it's job, but don't expect miracles.

You can also try Roland, sometimes used ones are sold for a fair price and they are far more better than the new, cheap versions. Avoid Casio at all cost. With daily use, the keys will deteriorate, and won't be so good to touch or use at all. Not talking about the sound. Casio offers a great amount of styles and voices which worse than the sound of a jewerly box.

All in all, for that amount of cash get a used Roland or a Yamaha. Nord is a different level, but if you get your hands on one, stick to it. And if in the near future you plan to get another gift for them, add this to your shopping cart, as it really gives a thrust to the volume. Good for personal use, you can connect a simple jack to it and get loud at house parties. But adding to the piano really makes a difference compared to a 2.5 watt speaker, they usually have.

Oh and let's not forget about the sustain pedal, which is also a nice addition. Brand specific pedals are always a bit more expensive, I've found a Yamaha pedal at 4x price of a general pedal, but must have been my luck. You can check the prices here and compare to the ones your local store offer.

I just looked up a video on the Yamaha V80 and I am quite tempted to grab one for myself now... You know. Because I totally know how to play a keyboard.

First up, those aren't synthesizers but keyboards and/or electronic pianos. Analog synthesizers are something completely different.

The definitively best choice for begginers in keyboards is Yamaha EZ-220. Might also want to download buy Synthesia and find some easy .midis. You can also try Yamaha DGX-230, which trades off key lighting for one more octave and a bit higher price.

Yeah. People tend to call regular keyboards synths, but you usually get what's the deal about after the customer describes for what purpose he wants to use.

The EZ-220 is indeed a genuine device, but as my pianist friend suggested it's better to learn reading sheets without it, should learn the sounds instead the hand gestures. That was him, might be a different case with other people.

Spazzy, if you have the chance to try them, get the one with the better sound. Don't go for the "oh, so many voices, effects, styles... it's a must get". Try out as much as you can and you'll hear the difference. Yamaha will be the best for you, but there is difference between them too.

Edit: Just saw that you get a foot switch as well with the V80, at least Thomann gives one in the package.

I gree with Exodus: I hav a cheap Keybord at Home. I thougt:" So many Buttons and Functions! It must be good!." Problem: None of these Functions are Good.
Best Choice: an E-Piano. A Piano shout sounds like a Piano!

It depends on what Sindroms thinks his sister will do with it. It sounds like we're going down the 'having lots of fun with keyboards' route, so I'd mostly agree with Exodus's sentiments.

But yes, Protege is correct - there is a definite difference in function between a hardware synth and a keyboard, even if some of the lines do blur between them. A keyboard is more of a performance instrument.

The subject of "should you learn sheets at all nowadays" is a subject for a totally different debate.

As I said, I am learning the piano myself on a keyboard (albeit not EZ-220, got something cheaper) and Synthesia and I gotta say that I feel a lot more comfortable with it even though Overwolf shows just 20 hours in.

I realized I never updated the result of this.
So here it is, the Yamaha DGX-650.
