It's singleplayer only and it's more of a mouse click type of gameplay instead of actual arcade shooting, maneuvering in all 3 dimensions and whatnot. The only actually similar rival I can think of is Freespace (2). There's probably more, but I'm not that knowledgeable about that sort of stuff.

I tried Evochron Mercenary a few years ago. Extremely impressive for a one man project, but unfortunately I didn't find it particularly interesting.

They released Evochron Legacy recently. FML that tutorial is long af and hard to get into, impressive otherwise though.
