You can still get some basic design done in blender and then import it into Maya, righto?

Run the build.py script to generate the addon .zip file that is loaded and used as described in readme.

Can run blender. Get an idea for the "design" as Spazzy said and then make a normal ship as usual.

nevermind that, I was mistaken. Just do as Swallow has said >>

obviously you'll need to have python installed to run the file.

The thing is that I am doing stuff in Ubuntu, so I have nothing to worry about missing runtimes.

Also, I suggest to disable the "Use bevel" option as it will rise up the polycount on high-segmented ships to hundreds of thousands, while without it it will be tens of thousands.
