i don t think its that "dark" on the server. - the situation on the server is anything but "sad". - and frankly, i don t see many people using a story to justify their equipment... some, yes... but by far not the majority... rather a miniscule minority.

most of the people are very responsible, no matter if they re newbies or veterans... so i wouldn t find much to complain there... .

however, - there is no "common sense" anymore - none that is clearly defined. roleplay does justify a lot... and imo, it should do. - most people i see here don t "use" or abuse roleplay or stories to become godly. - there is a lot of bickering about rather unimportant stuff that is blown up to fully fletched arguments. - pointless arguments that only cause drama.

i don t really see a double standard... but i would describe it as a varying tolerance - sometimes. its nothing really serious though. - the server works and runs smoothly. - i don t see great imbalances ( but then i don t see many "cap-whores" either ... so maybe i m just blind )

i think the players should be a lot more tolerant with others. - so should the admins, ... sometimes. now i don t know how many people are sanctioned and how many are simply "warned" or.... nicely / politely spoken to. - - i think most problems can be easily solved when someone just speaks to the culprits. but like i say, i don t know how often that happens and if a sanction is really the last option.

anyway....... i wouldn t draw such a dark picture, - cause its far from being that dark.

My question...

What double standards?

The unwritten rules you're talking about, globalp, are called the rules of common sense.

I'd agree, were it not for someone being recently sanctioned for civilian equipment.

I'm normally very willing to sit back and let the admins do their job, but something about that just seems wrong.

writing of stories to justify a choice of ship and loadout for PvP. So what happened ?
There are few compromises now, a lot less common sense, and attacks on those who's RP is a part of
Discovery's history.
We used to pride ourselves on sticking to the sometimes unwritten rules of conduct on the use of weapons
available where they shouldn't be, not using those we could almost justify with a little tinkering of reps and
affiliations. Now we seem have a race to grab the best out there, and then we have post after post trying to vindicate their mounting and use.
Post -your- excuses please ...

Hey Hoodlum

I think what you're getting into here is what someones view of Role play is or does. Sure Role play is about characterization, in game most definitely, but also here on the forums as well.
I think though, that to say that "writing stories" in order to obtain something is some kind of problem is ignoring the fact though that doing exactly that is encouraged by factions players and even admins on this server. Its half the game if you want to be accepted into the keepers, and i know it's requested if you even want to get a hint of even being considered for a terrorist ID. Factions demand it for use of capships and you can see examples of that even in todays recent posts.
You can see how this is then easily extended to justifying weapons etc? It's part of what the community does... Role play it, justify it, write a story for it - a newcomer to these forums is going to see that written everywhere.
I am not trying to justify whatever claims cross your desk, im sure there are thousands of them, just explaining what i think a lot of newcomers might consider what is the norm around here.

It's in moments like these that i'm kind of glad i lag way too much to get into PVP:)

Whoo! 16 people reading this... Funny what happens when an admin posts.:P

Point one! - I hate you, Blunt.

Point two! - I agree with you, Tenacity. Well said.

I'm really tired of seeing pirates decked out with an entire setup of codenames. Sure, you can get them off wrecks. Sure, you can get them off of dealers. BUT!

In RP, lets be honest. Would a dealer go, "Oh sure, Hacker. Take this THOR," or, "No problem, Rogue! Enjoy the JADE!"... Honestly, no. The pirates would be more likely the EXPLODE him that purchase a super-god gun off of him. Which brings me to the first part of the previous paragraph.

The real question is: IS THAT WRECK within your AoI? Because really, you have no business having it otherwise. Absolutely none, much less having 4 of them on each of your ships in the fleet.

Some might say, "Oh... We umm... We researched and duplicated it!" That sirs, is bull-fooey. No way some petty pirates are going to dedicate their very small amount of space to research a gun that it four people long and three people wide.

... And then proceed to duplicate it. They need that room for small arms, commodities, and sleeping quarters.

Tenacity is right, everybody plays with more of a PvP attitude than a RP attitude. It's all, "What IF I get in a fight...?" What if you do? What if you lose? Who cares! As long as you're living the story realistically instead of just playing a game.

Oh... And Mr. Hood... I just like writing stories. That's the main reason I'm writing up Lyca. Just thought I'd throw that out there as to why I write stories.

Adieu, sirs and... Unselie. Maybe you'll think about this, faction leaders and proceed to adjust your fantasy arsenal accordingly.

Sorry for the hijack, Jes, but it's related. People are screaming for indie rights these days. Now, I ask you, what is the point of a faction? What is the point of organizing a force? To employ that organization to further its members goals, in the case of a gaming faction or clan, control, power, influence, etc., in their chosen virtual world. If anybody wants to tell us that our faction can't take a position of authority over the unfactionized players, then why were we allowed to form a faction in the first place? Now do we have double standards?

In other news, I agree completely. When I wrote my original Roleplay for the Fantasia and Perihelion I didn't give a damn about combat edge. I was horrible in anything, period. I wanted to create something unique within the limits of reason and explore the possible scenarios for y characters and their ships. In today's Discovery, if I came fresh off the boat and tried to make the Fantasia today people would accuse me of being attracted by the Bretonian Battleship's combat capabilities and I'd likely be sanctioned or TBFed off the server and forums. Why? Because peoplee are using loopholes to get the best toys. Now I ask you, WHAT is that?

I'm done.

Because those of you in factions might like to play as an organised group, with rules and structures within a hierarchical organisation allowing you greater access in game to money, allies, group activities and help. Others, may actually enjoy organising these things.

Those who do not want to join a faction might want to participate in those same group activities from time to time, however they might not want to be limited to the organisation and or requirements a faction might demand. They might also conceivably have a role play reason to not be in a faction (as my character does, and i know of others who also have)

One does not erase a persons right to be the other.
