I use messages like "Guten Tag, Kapitaen! *Rudolf tips his hat*" plus their English and French equivalents. Now I just stick to a simple "Guten Tag" (or even less). Not that I'm lazy but I'm also manoeuvring a ship. And if you -both- are on full speed, /1 is typed very quickly. But when typing the above message, the other guy/girl is already long gone and out of reception. So why bothering typing a message that won't be read?

It becomes worse when engaging "bad" guys. While I am typing a message to make them stop, they just do everything to get away. I'm not particularly good in AND steering a ship AND shooting guns AND shooting disruptors AND writing a message. I can manage the first three but adding the writing is the killer.
My standard messages:
- Please stop your engines and allow an inspection.
- Stop your engines NOW or face the consequences!
- You didn't stop so you will be shot!

I have some bad characters as well. If I got caught, do you think I waist time in typing messages if I can ran away? By doing so I give my self away anyway. If people then start shooting at me, I accept that as part of the RP. And believe me, not needing to type saved my life several times. My standard reply, just in case it fits as an answer: "No!"

And when caught, I'll type everything to save my a**** Smile

Let's say it in this way: SETMSG is good when in a hurry. Otherwise I type everything by hand.

So PLEASE keep it!

Experiment successful

wouldn't no change be an argument for /setmsg

convenience with no downside

What we have learned from this:
People will continue to be jerks with or without /setmsg because it is ultimately an attitude issue and not a gameplay issue.

After reading trough almost every comment it made me sad.

I only saw people having trouble with /setmsg cmd about those who abuse it.

But as I, trader, like the cmd because that eliminates the "silent" trading aspect from me.

As usually I have only 3 preset messages on any given character and that's it.

My suggestion is: Limit the preset message count to 3 or even 1. That way people would loose the 9 line pew pew cmd spam but giving traders, law enforcers and pirates the ability to contact a person quickly and then continuing with better and more in depth RP with said person.

As from my own experience, as a trader: It is quite easy to "run" away from a pirate who is a slow typer and that is actually unfair to them. And I kinda hate the "silent' traders.... C'mon guys.... Space is HUGE, we all get lonely and tired of seeing other fellow traders but not saying a word to each other......

As a Law enforcer: It is quite hard to write something like this "This is Rheinland Military Vessel Oidipus, Please shut down your engines and prepare to be scanned" when the person in question is near Jumphole/Gate, Station, Planet and/or Tradelane without typos.

As a Pirate: It is kinda hard to disable the Tradelane, write something like this "Greetings there. I would advise you to shutdown your Engines and sit tight while I scan you" in sequence when the person can basically engage cruise engine and get away without saying a word.

As you might have guessed that English isn't my native tongue, and I do write with typos here and there but that is if I write it in a hurry and without thinking....

Anyway, that is my point of view of the whole situation.

Cheers and Hope to see you guys in Space.....
