Nice baby steps into M. Foucault there OP, but I'll be more "down to earth":

I once knew a guy who could (through cheating) spawn a fully flyable sun.

That's why we ban.

I know it's cheating, but damn that does sounds like fun...

Lyth's ban was uncalled for, and Laz was an idiot who thought we could get away with deleting faction Shared ships. I don't believe what both of them did deserves them a permanent ban and by that I mean over 6 months ban.

Admins? Anyone?

Here's my input on this:

Punishment is necessary. You need rules. I'm not saying, Fox, that you are for no rules. But the ban is a tool that, when used properly, works. Punishment works, and has been proven to work for thousands of years. Say we all give them second chances. And then they use that chance and mess up doing the same crap. Are you going to give them another chance? The line must be drawn somewhere. The more chances you give people the more they know they can get away with. If disco had a second chance rule, people would be more likely to commit acts that are toxic to the community, because they know that they can do one bad act without severe repercussions due to the second chance. Banning works, because it keeps people who are harmful to disco away. And, in some cases, those people change.

Yes, some people do change. But the reason they changed was because of the punishment. I've never heard of a criminal who didn't get punished and he changed on his own. Look at Nelson Mandela. He went to prison, and he changed. But that was after being incarcerated. Please give me some examples of known criminals changing before getting punished if you find some, I'd like to know. I mean bad, bad people. Not convenient store robbers. But a lot of people who do bad things generally keep doing them after prison, or a ban, sanction, etc. It's human nature. We as a species aren't truly, inherently good. (cue the controversy)

But sometimes sorry won't cut it. Saying sorry doesn't wipe it all away. If you cheat, and your sorry, you should still get punished. Maybe less punishment if you are aware that what you did is wrong or maybe less punishment if you admit you did it. It sounds harsh, but the truth hurts, doesn't it?

Bottom line is, (literally) don't do things that will get you in trouble and you'll be fine. The admins are not out to "get" you. They are here to keep this very fragile community afloat. Keep the ban. Why?

Because it works.

I'm not heavily invested in this discussion in any way but I'd just like to point out that the internet has not been around for thousands of years, and that in the relatively short period of time that it has, punishment on it has been proven very succinctly not to work.

There are only two things that the admin team should be aiming to do and that is to inform unaware players of the rules (and yes, things viewed as punishments such as throwing an OOCing dude's ship in bastille are actually educational measures), or permanent removal, which is a joke on a game engine so old which can be so easily hacked.

Punishment doesn't work when there are no tangible consequences. Losing your access to a video game is not a tangible consequence.

I meant punishment as in real life on that quote. Sorry for the confusion.

No my little friends, these ships was really mine! the POB core2 too. like i said, it's just an example for you to show how are the rules and their consequence. have you heard something about NoMe enterprise?

like i have already said, i'm not a lier nor a cheater, but for cheater, you have on this list, the sanction's result.

when the sanction has been taken, i was on the point to creat a NoMe faction with my own tag. the grass has been cut Under my feets

in other hand, yes i have a good memory, it served me 1 time ingame but it's far!

to not be in a faction, does not mean no RP (sombra)

several of my rp thread as been moved in flood section, but not by my choice! when i flood, i flood when i am serious, it's seriously not for a joke or for the fun.

sombra try to understand me like the other on forum, you will see it's enought easy to do *little smile)

It's a paradox. You can't understand him, he can't understand you.
