I've noticed that the RP server has been suffering from many crashes recently, I've read here, that they're caused by people carrying to much different cargo and people trying to hack the server.
I don't think the players out there understand why they're not allowed to carry nuch different cargo so they just ignore the rule. If you would put it in a way that might be in their interrest too, like:

"To reduce the server crashes please do bot carry this and that and do not have more money than allowed, this will eventually reduce lag and crashed, thank you"

Now they would know what their... mistakes have caused and they will eventually put an end to that. I had not yet understood why I was not allowed to have too much cargo or too much money, but I took the time and looked at the forums. Not all people do this, and this change to the announcements may help the players follow your rules.

Thanks for reading, please add your thoughts.

The server crashes are not from people carrying too much cargo or having too much money - they're caused by:
a) external sources attempting to hack the server
and
b) too many players on the server - freelancer's standard max is like 50 players on an online server, while discovery RP 24/7 is altered to hold up to 200 online at a time.

Actually, FL's standard max is 128.;)

Also, holding too many items usually won't crash the server, but your character will become bugged and will be deleted with no compensation. We had a long (12 hour +) downtime before because of numerous corrupted character files.

As for the original idea itself, I only wish people would read those notices that pop up on the side.

Players running modified clients CAN cause the server to crash and/or lag horribly.

Occasionally, trying to dock or undock with too much money or too many items can crash the server--though usually just the player.

I think that the crashes are caused by the mod itself. Too many modification were made on standard Freelancer data files, so it wouldn`t be suprise for a server to crash a lot, there may be some "holes" in there, if you know what i mean;).

Also, haveing diferent type of items and lot`s of money lead to character corruption, so many corrupted characters that aren`t deleted might have some efect on crashes.

my 2 cents :D

This is one of the more carefully crafted mods--I have played on horribly modded servers and Discovery is pretty 'tight' overall.

Any mod can be inherently unstable and Freelancer itself is too.

Things like npc spawn, shot numbers, death times--all can cause server to fitz.

But the crashes on weekends are most likely a lot of players trying cheats or logging on with not fully uninstalled mods from elsewhere plus all the other things.

Modified clients? As in cheating by changing files and stuff?

Anything I say is not intended as offensive, and to try and deliberately misinterpret it as such would be an attempt at trolling via misrepresentation.

It's not a conspiracy, it's localised bias. They're not intelligent enough to form a conspiracy.

yes, such as running any mod other then discovery, on top of the discovery mod. other then that there are other cheating 'tools' that scumbags like to use to gain unfair advantage.

these all lead to corrupted data, and you guessed it, server crashes.

this is why it is such an important task to keep the server free of cheaters.

Yes, this is one of better crafted mods and good optimised, compared to other modded servers, but there is allways a "minimal risk" when putting a mod in use, no matter how carefully crafted, the mod can conflict with Freelancer`s standard data filles (not only with Freelancer, all games that have mods will expirience crashes). Discovery mod is indeed more carefully crafted, otherwise, the server with soo many modifications would crash every 20 minutes, so we need to consider ourselves lucky...

Besides, i saw that in mod development players too participate in mod expanison, by making their own ships and/or weapons (while admins put more sustems). Their creations may be the cause of crash, since the textures, models, data files ,ect... may confilct with Freelancer`s standard files and/or other mod`s files.

Quote:Things like npc spawn, shot numbers, death times--all can cause server to fitz.

Those things can`t cause server to crash, but can add effect.

You are right there:nyam:.

Just to say one more thing: the topic title doesen`t match with the disscusion within it (it says for an idea to make ppl folow rules, and we discuss about cause of crashes:P).

Strongly disagree with your comments about "modding" any game can make it crash.
I know plenty of games that have WAY more mods and work fine.

The problem is that FL was made by Microsoft with little thought to the future of it - and plenty of not-logical things going on ingame. I don't personally know what the scripting is like inside the FL files, but I'm making an assumption here (pretty safe to assume I think) that because it was made by Microsoft...

Then the Golbal Server was dropped. So everything is hacked and run by the community.
Even when I played Vanilla MP FL it would still crash, because of cheaters joining the game and ruining it for others.

I could almost guarantee that if we had no cheaters on Disco...it would hardly crash - if ever. Disco is one of the best run mods I have come across. I've played on FL-TNG servers, Freeworlds, BSG, etcetc. Disco has less crashes (that I've observed) than many of the other mods.

It's pretty stable from my end.

*This topic reminds me of some (not all) American players - who are relatively speaking next-door to the server - complaining of pings near 198. "Its so slow!!! I get 20 ping usually!" My standard ping is 330-380. I can still play and enjoy the game. You just need to put up with it - no big deal.

Same deal with the crashes. You just need to put up with it. The admins are doing all they can. They are outnumbered 40 to 1 though. That's a hell of a lot of Starfliers to deal with.

Edit: Actually...it might be more than 40 to 1.

:crazy::mellow:

Sorry. That got kinda off topic.
Yes I think it's a good idea to explain why a rule is in place. The best place would be on the forums.
But then you will always get people who don't read the forums or who are just...noobs... and cheat.
