The entire idea is a good "in-theory" one. The main problems you'll run into are finding a use for such a thing and getting the implementation perfect. Do it wrong and you end up with Crossfire. (For those that don't know, their 'planets' were buggy as all hell and half the time if you flew at the ground with enough speed you'd go right through and get completely stuck.

The implementation would have to be done with machine precision. @Treewrym actually showed me a thing or two regarding this. 95% of the work would have to be done in 3DSMax using MaxScript (for precising numbering and number generation) and using the 3DS -> FLINI exporter (if that still exists). It would work similar to how the "Dyson Interior Gen" Treewyrm designed, I'd guess.

I noticed that you got 50% of what I wanted to say.

Remove docking rings and then put atmosphere systems. That is my main thought. There would be no "check it for 2-4 hours then never check it again" or any uselsessness on that.

I'm just talking about the "how possible is this" factor. Unless you have the skill/time - not very.

This is the same reason you're not likely to see any more atmospheric systems unless they actually do something, like Darlington's which serves a purpose, namely helping to condense Newcastle.

How about an urban surface of rekt Leeds for some planetary action? That's an idea I've had for years now after seeing the magic Yuri did with Major. The planetary system doesn't have to be a static eye candy for a single extensive visit or two then being left without further use. Interactive features could be installed, a GRN base here, a BAF resistance bunker there, perhaps even some mod-wise representation of the surface resistance story.

Doing this for every docking ring would be a massive workload, as you would have to create all the surface assets for each planet so they aren't all the same, then edit the systems and then somehow make it worth visiting. Even creating one fighter model and doing it properly can take a lot of time.

Something unique like Thyrzul's Leeds proposal would be much more feasible. The biggest question I'd ask is how do you hitbox natural terrain? Freelancer is very finicky with hitbox meshes well and natural planetary terrain is a lot more irregular than Omicron Major's surface models.

The best thing I like about my idea of an urban surface section of Leeds is that you don't have to deal with natural planetary terrain in a dense city district of an industrial planet. It can be as boxy as - or even boxier than - Major's surface models.

EDIT: There is a reason I didn't propose Cambridge or Gran Canaria.
