People spend more time flying their transport to make money than they would spend zapping their base to fix it. More time spent in open space leads to more chances for interaction. Snak3 is right.

Yo dude, I didn't say they should completely remove that thing, read again. I mentioned that the commodity would be changed to some sort of Fuel to maintain the base however when it comes to hull, repair ships would be required. I'm not saying completely remove that part of it. Nor does the thread say "Remove Supplying PoBs". I just think it'd be a nice little addition kinda like Miners mine ore for transports, Repair Ships would take over the role of repairing PoB hull while transports take the role of supplying it with Fuel or Energy, some sort of Power (we have MOX, H-Fuel, Deuterium etc.).

UPD - jokes aside, interactions generate practically only lane trading. Disregarding PoB supply or not. I was rarely interrupted just flying straight from hole to hole (as well as rarely intercepted somebody for real). Regarding PoBs, trader-pirate interactions mostly happening near of PoB anyway. I also think, sneklancer meant make repships participate in repairing process. Something like when station have fuel - its only dont take W&T, but you need manually repair station.

Tho, i dont see how possible make it entertaining.

The answer here is obvious. You make the fuel expense, whatever it is, near to or equal to current other consumables. I would expect that a certain amount of balancing would need to be done because, while the traveling element of repair would be negligible, there would still need to be an absolute minimum of time investiture spent.

Additionally, I believe that the interaction argument is unfounded in any case. Yes, the predator has to go looking for the prey, but that merely puts the impetus on the predator to actually hunt instead of being an ambusher. You can't say it doesn't already happen, it would only become more frequent.
