There is a danger in secrets, both in seeking and in knowing. Some things are meant to be hidden from view. Some mysteries defy understanding, and sometimes even the things we think we know are untrue. Some secrets should remain untouched.
I'll be the happy insane one to say, dev forced story changes ARE metagaming. Its obviously making things awesome for a small group of people, and everyone else is scratching their heads like wtf? almost every patch.
Just slow down, have an event for something being destroyed or taken. People like to come to sieges and RP around their involvement.
Is it really so hard to set an HP on a ship (npc station) and let players go at it freely for one 24 hr period between restarts, and call a winner at the end of it? We could do this twice a week and get so much done.
