La Maréchaussée de Gaule
The Marshalcy of Gallia

Identité: Eugene Duparc, Peloton Commander Of The 16th Bataillon

Under the command of Marechal-des-logis Severine Travere, a royal marine peloton was assembled out of Battleship La Riche. The peloton consisted of 60 Royal marines split up into five squads. Our orders were to sweep the wrecked valor for any infiltrators and inspect the status of the vital sub-systems. The five squads would breach into the main hangar bay on the underside of the vessel with a squad heading to the bridge, armoury, reactor control, life support, and the last remaining with the freighter. Using the Inquisitrice, an Aurochs freighter, we were transported to the wreck of the RNS Peremptoire with escort from Marc Toure and Samuel Deschamps in Lynxes.

Once we arrived, the pilot performed several scans of the Peremptoire to check for life signs and to inspect the outer hull for damages. The hull was deemed to be structurally sound with no major hull breaches detected. All primary and secondary turrets were stripped from the hull with only the forward gun remaining as its integral with the forward hull. Someone spent a decent bit of time scavenging parts off of her, local junkers, Maquis, Brigands – I'm not sure. Either way someone has been here. Once satisfied with the scans, the pilot docked on the belly of the valor where we prepared to breach.

The Inquisitrice docked with the Peremptoire

At 21:36 hours we breached, each squad securing different portions of the hangar. The decks were littered with dead crew sprawled out in every direction. Our scanners showed high levels of CO2, the life support system was offline, malfunctioning, or damaged. Main power also was offline or damaged with only a few lights running off of emergency power. Several of the dead crew were quickly inspected which revealed no serious injuries, it seems they suffocated. We proceeded with the mission with the four squads heading to their objective.
As the squads traveled through the corridors more dead bodies were encountered with similar cause of death. The squads heading towards reactor control and life support inspected bodies with gunshot wounds. The walls of the corridors had been damaged by small arms fire, blood pooled around the dead bodies. All the dead wore the same Royal Navy uniform, it looked like they were shooting at each other. Visuals provided below.

Interior of the Peremptoire near reactor control

As the squads traveled through the ship, signs of tampering were prominent: someone else had been onboard and taken valuable components from her. Wall terminals were ripped open and whatever components that were inside were torn out with little care. Scavengers could still be on board but hidden away behind the walls or small compartments, almost impossible to find with only 5 squads in a reasonable amount of time. If we return, a larger force will be required to systematically search the entire vessel to rout out any unwanted guests.

Interior corridor

The bloodshed got worse the closer the squad got to life support and the reactor. Bodies slumped over leaning against bulkheads where they had once been taking cover during the firefight. They bled out with guns in hand with their adversary across the corridors in a similar state. Hard to tell if they died from the gunshot wounds or the lack of oxygen – guess it doesn't matter now. The squads one by one made it to their objective. The bridge was on lockdown and sealed off, standard procedure if intruders are on board. Torches were brought to burn through any obstacles like this. A small entrance into the bridge was all that was needed for us. This thick metal door ended up taking a while to burn through, around 15 minutes.

Like the rest of the ship, the bridge lacked any sort of environment with the dead bridge crew scattered around. Their cause of death seemed to be from suffocation as no other external injuries were found. All the main controls seemed to be intact without any tampering detectable. A data recorder was taken from the bridge to be inspected back on base which hopefully can tell us what happened here. Unlike the bridge, the armoury had been heavily looted with the gun lockers busted open and their contents stolen. Crates of ammo, explosives, and other ordinances were opened with some of their contents missing. Perhaps some used during the firefights onboard and others stolen by criminals. The squad that reached the reactor control saw crew members shot at their stations. It seems like this was the epicenter of the violence and the start of it all. A few were shot from behind, caught by surprise by their killer. The reactor was offline but seemed intact and in working condition. Approaching the life support system, scorch marks could be seen on the walls with a large whole open to space. The whole compartment was sucked into space and the surrounding area now in a vacuum. It appears the explosion originated from the interior of the ship. Looks like sabotage to me. Life support won't be easily turned on again without extensive repair.

With our objective complete we returned back to the freighter in the hanger. The data recorder was given to Marechal-des-logis Severine Travere onboard the Inquisitrice. The freighter undocked and we made our burn back to Battleship La Riche.

For Maréchal Laroux,

Upon receipt of the data recorder, I delivered it to a group of forensic scientists among our security teams aboard La Riche. Their analysis was incomplete, as the logs indicate an attempt to modify the recorder's storage shortly before the Peremptoire lost its primary power source. The power loss interrupted the tampering process, but also interrupted recording, as most of the ship's major systems ceased sending their logs to the recorder. What forensics was able to recover indicates a slackened security posture aboard the Peremptoire. The major highlights:

  1. Internal surveillance systems were tampered with, with many camera recordings showing suspicious or outright spurious feeds.
  2. Very low-ranking crew members had unusually high levels of access authorization. About a dozen enlisted personnel had access to critical maintenance areas (reactor, life support, and armoury) for which their ranks would ordinarily be insufficient. The instances of access were retained in the logs.
  3. Several instances of alarms, all of them specified as drills by the system. The number of drills, which were for lockdown and anti-boarding scenarios, was unusually high.
  4. Life support suffered a massive failure about 8 hours prior to the reactor power-down, around the same time that internal sensors detected gunfire, bulkhead damage, and various door, control panel, and computer failures.
  5. The bridge was sealed less than 15 minutes after the life support failure.
  6. Hangar doors were opened less than three hours after the life support failure, and closed not long after.

I strongly suspect sabotage, though the event recorder fails to show the entire picture -- we do not know whether the saboteurs were spies or insider mutineers. A plausible interpretation of these events is thus:

Some internal threat had sufficient authority and sway with a number of crew members to elevate their access permissions to areas on board the ship, and these crew members used their elevated privileges to attain knowledge of security vulnerabilities in the work shifts and physical equipment of critical areas.

The same threat abused their authority to organize more frequent drills, which not only gave the saboteur crew an opportunity to examine emergency procedures for weaknesses, but likely also fatigued the rest of the crew, dulling their interest in performing the drills to their normal operational standards.

The life support equipment was destroyed, the saboteurs fought their way through the ship to reach items of interest, then to the hangar, where they launched a number of small combat craft. The Peremptoire's command, or what was left of it, began emergency procedures, not knowing whether life support was out due to power trouble or damage. The low-power state of the ship as she was found may be explained by these procedures.

We cannot know the events leading to the Peremptoire's demise more specifically unless we can recover crew logs, which are usually stored on personal terminals, so as to inhibit their wholesale collection by hostile combatants in the data recorder of the ship in the event of destruction, capture, or invasion. Similarly, external communications would be recorded separately by the command center.

For now, however, the state of the ship is physically as follows:
  • Reactor powered down, likely in need of maintenance and refueling.
  • Life support system destroyed. Needs replacement.
  • Hangar bay doors cut open by 16th Battalion investigation.
  • Command center doors cut open by 16th Battalion investigation.
  • Various doors, computers, and control panels likely damaged or disabled, needing repair or replacement.
  • All external armament, sans forward cannon, stripped by scrappers. Will require replacement.
  • Bulkheads damaged by sustained weaponsfire during internal struggle. Will require reinforcement.
  • Deceased personnel will require removal.

External scans by the Inquisitrice showed no notable hull damage, just some scoring and denting by micrometeorites and small, stray projectiles.

I believe that the Peremptoire is recoverable, although it would be impractical to repair the ship's entire life support system in situ. Instead, for its recovery, I would propose the following steps:

  1. Establish a small area of the ship, including the command center, to place a temporary CO2 scrubbing system and some makeshift crew quarters.
  2. Perform necessary reactor maintenance in spacesuits and power up the systems necessary for flight.
  3. Fly the ship to Issoudun with escorts and a fleet maintenance outfit to contend with potential interruptions en route.

From there we can determine our process for rehabilitating the Peremptoire.

S. Travere

Sortie report.

Encountered a Deep Space Engineering Titanic-class super transport in Tau-31.

The Captain proved less than compliant with my orders and repeated attempts to assert authority. Before I depressurized the ship for a refusal to submit a fee in return for mercy, the Captain made mention of the fact that he was supplying a base known as "Old Trafford" in the Manchester system.

Furthermore the cargo left behind at the site of the wreck was picked up and delivered to an installation of our own. With enough persistence, the cattle from the Houses will learn their place under the Enclave's rule.

Nothing further to report.

A traitorous Gallic Miner was destroyed in Languedoc after refusing my orders.

With the assistance of Brigadier Ruben Leclere two OSI whales were fined for their existence and let go. Shortly after two Bretonian fighers were engaged and destroyed. Leclere took critical damage during the battle and was recovered afterwards.

We used the Autorite as a tender for the Refection. As an attachment, you will see the manifest for the repair materials used. The full 16th battalion of Royal Marines and a large complement of engineering crew, technicians, and officers boarded the Peremptoire to establish a minimal operable habitat

VL Refection, making external hull repairs to Peremptoire.

Installing habitat-related equipment.

Clearing bridge viewports of dust and debris.

Habitat adjustments and more hull repair.

Engine maintenance and refueling.

The engineering team has worked expediently under Peloton Commander Duparc's orders for the last few days. They have managed to partially restore life support to the command center and one crew dormitory, as well as a few intervening areas. Engine repairs were minimal and they hummed back to life without issue. The ship's internal gyroscopes still functioned, so navigation is possible.

While the crew continues their repairs, we will await the arrival of escorts in the cover of the asteroid field. When they arrive, the Peremptoire will begin its journey to Issoudun.

Julian D`Aboville and I went to Tau 31 and found a DSE transport who seemed to be having some trouble communicating with us and would not heed our demands so we relieved his ship of its parts by force and transported them back to friendly territory. Attached are the communication logs.

With the assistance of Refection and the repair crews the Peremptoire was brought back from the dead. The jerry-rigged life support system was sub-optimal and barely could keep up with the skeleton crew. The main reactor was brought back to life without issue but power throughout the ship was on the fritz with relays, transformers, and power conduits missing or damaged. The minimal number of repairs that were needed for our short journey to Issoudun Shipyard were completed.

An escort attachment was brought in to escort the Peremptoire through Brittany and Aquitaine, consisting of two Lynxes and a Perilous. The main engines were brought to 50% power and we started our slow journey to the shipyard.

Operations began with a bomber sortie in Brittany. System security reported an unknown contact. I encountered the contact in the D'Iroise field and disrupted its engines until Agent Chasseur and Brigadier Leclere arrived. It was a Corvo, operated by the Golden Chrysanthemums. Until they arrived, the communications officer on board the ship refused to answer any questions. A recording of the incident is as follows.

[07.03.2020 02:58:44] MdG/-Ruben.Leclere.: Well Done.
[07.03.2020 02:58:50] MdG/-Severine.Travere:: All cleaned up.

The crew was not especially combat-capable, despite their heavy anti-fighter defenses. The vessel was dispatched with ease, proof attached. More concerning is the presence of the Golden Chrysanthemums in our space, potentially spying on us, or perhaps exploiting a resource we have overlooked.

Agent Chasseur returned to Intervention Force duties.

We transitioned to a logistics operation in support of MAE's construction endeavours, and brought Cavalier LeMeingre out for escort training. Lieutenant D'Aboville commanded the flight from VL Chapeauroux, and I took helm of VL Sormonne. Brigadier Leclere flew escort lead.

LeMeingre had some navigational difficulties, but the trip was otherwise uneventful. Tantalum exported to Kusari, Industrial Hardware delivered to Tromelin Observatory. LeMeingre still needs his transponder sorted out, and is a rusty pilot, but I expect he'll prove worthy in time.

Lieutenant D'Aboville took his leave and LeMeingre was debriefed following his first outing on Fort Albi. Leclere and I swapped ships for a patrol into Dublin. We went looking for gold. The mining fields were uncommonly quiet, but we found a supply ship and levied a tax, at least. Proof of transaction attached.

No casualties.
