First off, it's not oorp for BH's to go after pirates, is it? So what exactly is the complaint?

Most of the complaining I see directed at indies in BH BC's comes from the factions, and generally reflect the faction anti-indie sentiment that pervades the server.

Which is funny because it's the factions who are one of the reasons we have so many indies in BH BC's to begin with.

another reason i might do this is so i can RP with more people it can get lonely when none of my fellow faction members are on when im on my KNF character or my rogue.

It gets so lonely on my KNF char. I only have the powertraders doing the diamonds/niobium run to talk to. *Sigh* I know how you feel.

The faction player's get mad because unless their leader's say so. they have to fly a small ship while indie's save up and buy a cap. That is also reason why faction's alway's the one's wanting cap's restricted to guard system's only.

the term "independent" is wrong there - but has itself established somehow. - a char that is not in a faction is not independent. - he is part of the NPC faction - just like players who formed up a playerfaction and are bunched together under a player "banner".

the one most important measure to determine a characters affiliation is it ID - and for that, it makes no difference if a player has a player faction tag or not.

so, a player with a LSF ID and a LSF IFF + LSF ship etc. is by no means "independent". he is part of the LSF.

there are a few factions that support independence though - but not cause the player is not part of a playerfaction, but cause the NPC lore suggests independence.

[ zoners, freelancers, mercenaries, generic traders, generic pirates ] - i think thats about it... all other chars are ... well, dependent. playerfactions like to claim authority by impersonating highly ranked characters within the NPC factions hierarchy. - some non-factioned players tried it, too sometimes, but usually fail at that.
anyway, every char that has ... for example ... a LSF ID / IFF is indeed part of the LSF, and it makes no difference if he is part of a playerfaction or not factioned up. only some IDs present some problems ( like the generic military ID ) - another example is ... a char that has a playerfaction tag, but not an appropriate NPC faction tag is not part of the NPC faction. - so, if you see a KNF ship for example that has a military ID means that this char would in fact not be part of the KNF, no matter what the playerfaction tag suggests. ( doesn t happen - and if, its usually only happening for a char-setup ) - but for the matter of the situation, such a char is less a member of the KNF than a non-playerfactioned player with a KNF ID.

but its not a question of being dependent or independent - only the NPC faction itself can make you independent. but yes, i m just having a go at the TERM "independent".

Faction players join a faction that prohibits use of many caps because they believe in it, or want to give it a try, they are not controlled by their faction leaders to do this. Also, often enough, they have their own capitalships, outside of the faction banner. Factions don't force members to join, so members must only join if they think its ok.

They make an agreement to do something that they think will make the game more fun, and factions try to defend those people who agreed to be VULNERABLE by keeping the dangerous ships out of their hair. If I have two fighters on patrol, a hussar and a templar, and a hostile BC with 2 missile turrets attacks them, they probably will not be able to drop its shield. Its probable that they will not get any help, and the BC may even call in support to help it chase them down. This needs only happen a few times before every indie in a BC is hugely mistrusted. We don't know you, and the last guy who looked like you ruined our day.

Oh yes. The indie vs faction debate. FINALLY this is going to be discussed. Well it was a slow week forum-wise; there were no flames firing around the place, so huzzah for this.
Many players, myself included, play both faction and non faction characters (in the sense of player factions.) In my experience, faction players tend to stick around longer. That's just my expereince.
Why do I recommend to people that they join not one but many factions? Because you get to meet other people, explore Sirius and its dynamic politics in a little more depth and more importantly, have a bit of fun. Sure there are restrictions in place in many factions as regards capital ships and behaviour, but I don't see the harm in that and I have learned that playing Disco with a little bit of restraint is a lot more fun.
I don't like all the factions on the server. But there's enough choice to find one that suits whatever mood you're in. I actually quite enjoy playing a regular, run of the mill policeman in the BPA, a lower ranked officer in a Military faction - it's pretty straightforward, but I have yet to receive orders that might put me in before a tribunal investigating human rights abuses.
I'm sure that if I felt there was no real possibility of advancement in a faction where I was eager for it, I'd use a non-faction character to access the larger vessels. I don't think this would ever be a concern to me anyway because I think I can play well.
As for the control issue - well, you'd want to be pretty psychotic to want to exercise control over virtual territory in a game featuring spaceships.

There is also generally enough turnover in a faction that you can reach the top and fly a cap, if you really want to, in a month or two. If your playerlifespan is shorter than that....I'm afraid I probably don't want to see you in a cap anyway.

I've met and interacted with people all on my indie chars. It depends on how you present yourself. A faction member can either be a dick and treat non-faction members like the order treat nomads. Or he can be col and maintain the pleasant conversation. Same goes for independents.

Getting back to the issue of faction membership and how it affects your presence in-game. A BHer doesn't have to be a member of any playerfaction to be regarded as a fellow hunter as far as I'm concerned - I'll help a fellow Guild member in need, work together on contracts, share information so long as he opr she isn't being a complete twerp. Fellow playerfaction members I will probably know a little better, as we have a shared reputation and work together more.

The same goes for any other faction i.d.'s. If I see another Bretonian Police officer (hah likely) I'd assume he was assigned to a separate division and would work with him as a colleague. But I would be wary of how his behaviour might affect the BPA reputation. The tag in front of the name is easier to remember than any name itself when it comes to complaining in the forums.

I'm not sure if this is how all faction i.d.'s are viewed by everyone.
