This might sound quite random, but believe me it is what I experienced and I immediately uninstalled it. FireFox 3. I use the online listing to see who's who and what they're flying, thus I have the browser open at most times whilst playing. After installing FF3, the game would lag at points in the exact manner that you describe. I don't know if this is specifically a FF3 problem or maybe just my Windows setup, I don't know...but either way I didn't have the problem before and have not encountered ever since reinstalling FF2. With all this said, you might not even have FireFox at all.

Anyway, I strongly recommend purchasing a video card, dedicated hardware is always better than integrated. On-board video uses RAM for the memory rather than having its own modules and that can have a serious impact upon performance, with some cases resulting in unplayable games. I believe this is irrelevant of the amount of RAM you have. One gigabyte is certainly enough for this game, not perfect by all standards but enough...I was until recently using a half and I had little problems.

Alright, I downloaded the new drivers and now the computer goes to a black screen whenever I restart it - at the desktop. Any ideas?

edit-

let me rephrase...

I downloaded the recommended drivers from nvidia.com. I installed the drivers, and after installation the thing came up with the usual "you need to restart your computer". I clicked ok, the computer restarted

It went through the normal loading stuff, the windows xp loading bar and all that junk, but when it got to what was supposed to be my desktop - all I got was a black screen with a 1 pixel white strip across the top of the monitor. I can hear my virus scanner and yahoo messenger loading so I know my computer is still running, but I cant see anything that's going on - how am I supposed to fix it when I cant see it?

This is serious... until I get this fixed I cant use my own computer for anything. Please, help!

You downloaded the incorrect drivers for your on-board chip.

Go into the BIOS and select "Boot in safe mode on next restart" or hit F8 before the psot (beep)
It will ask you what you want to do. Boot with Windows XP OS in Safe Mode with networking.

Once you done that...Do a system restore, or un-install the bad driver. And download the compatable one. The motherboard disk should have the chipset driver for your on-board video device.

Maybe a re-install of the chipset drivers on the motherboard will help the situation.

I found this problem came and went, in its own due time. Both my computers, and my laptop both suffered from this issue, and it has happened a few times.

As mentioned above, you could have damaged your motherboard or on-board video chip operating your comuputer in extreem heat or with insufficient cooling.

I hope this helps, and you get it sorted mate:)

Cheers:cool:

it's not working.

I did the boot in safe mode with networking, the screen filled up with all that windows partition system 32 junk, the computer froze up for a couple minutes, then restarted itself and I cant see the screen still.

This is a mess :(

Agreed. What kind of video card slot is it? With a 6150, it should have a PCI-e. If you have a PCi or PCI-e card lying around, my advice is to shove it in. Windows'll boot with that and then you can tweak the 6150's drivers.

One thing you could always do is check that cables are attached correctly. And take a peak inside the case to verify that heatsink is ok.

Most probably what happened was a Microsoft update that messed up the video drivers (i.e. updated them). When you get your comp working go and check the installed updates list and see what was installed when the problems started.

Flying under radar.

the problem is i dont know how to get the comp working. I tried starting in safe mode and it just caused the comp to restart with no effect.

You got XP?

Try the repair then. Insert the CD and set the computer to boot from CD first (in BIOS) and start the comp CD inside. At some point it gives you a chance to select repair 'R'.

I would use that as a last resort though. Not many people have managed to repair their comps using that. And if you get it working the best you can hope for is a sort of "safe mode" where the wisest thing to do is to backup your data and do a clean install.

But if you don't have the windows CD then I'm pretty much out of ideas. Try getting a windows install cd from Microsoft by giving them your CD key (the one on the sticker that's usually on the side of the case).

Did you open the case and check that everything was ok?

Flying under radar.

I'm reluctant to believe this is a video problem since the BIOS evidently works and it certainly won't be an issue with drivers because they are not loaded in safe mode (it may also and issue). If you're familiar with the inside of the computer and have either two pieces of RAM or a spare that you can use, switch them around to confirm or rule out faulty RAM or damaged slots.

Since you are able to get into Windows in normal mode, even though there is no desktop, something is working but Explorer appears to be failing for whatever reason. If you can somehow get into the registry, it would be possible to force the system to load an additional process, such as Task Manager (you might try Ctrl+Alt+Del, but I doubt it'll work), so that you can access the files and even get online (if you're using a router, it should automatically go online if your settings allow it). One way of doing this is a boot disk which is something that EVERYBODY should have, be it the Windows set-up disk or something like Bart PE, or preferably both. These will actually allow you to access the files in their own right, but that's a different situation and may not allow you to get online (it is possible with Bart PE, but I don't know how to achieve it). If you cannot create a boot disk, you may be able to find one for purchase on eBay for example.

These possibilities should be examined before resorting to a system restore, repair or even the drastic full reinstall.

I must also note a critical difference between the two repair/restore options, soft and hard. The soft option is where only the Windows set-up is restored, in other words the Windows directory and the registry. The advantage is that all user and program files are kept, but you will need to reinstall all necessary applications and reconfigure Windows. All Windows updates will also be lost, including Service Pack 2 where relevant. The hard option is basically resetting the system to its factory condition, this will mean that you will lose ALL files. The only difference between the hard option and a format, so far as I'm aware, is that the former just deletes existing files and a format completely wipes the drive.
