My CPU at home is cooking on 4GB of RAM with Windows XP 64bit and I'm running just fine. No instability, no loss in efficiency or nothing...

True, XP 64bit can address 4GB of RAM but XP 32bit only addresses 3GB

Actually it can support up to 128gb of physical memory, why you would ever need that much I have no idea, and if you find a MoBo capable of supporting that much, I'll die of a heartattack.

Windows x86 can support more than 3GB of RAM, if you update something in the BIOS on your motherboard. We did it to a test bench at work, and it worked great, for a while...I will have to find out what.

Even so. You don't need 4GB. And as far as I'm aware, your CPU will only start "bottle necking" if the FSB on the CPU is higher then the RAM, and/or if two chips in a duel channel are of different speeds, and can also effect your computers performance.

For example:

A 1GB DDR2 chip @ 1066MHz is paired with a 1GB DDR2 @ 533MHz, the controller will bring your 1066 down to 533. So they both operate at the same speed.

Same goes for the CPU/RAM combination. And CPU/CPU combinations.

*Clears Throat*

MoBo has a 1,333 FSB (Front Side Bus)

Processor in Socket is an Intel Quad Core 3.4GHz currently overclocked to 4.2GHz

What's this "bottlenecking" you're refering to?

P.S. I know how a computer works 13cent, I'm qualified on hardware and software, so I'm not a complete noob, explaining it to me is like explaining how babies are born. Most of us here know (maybe besides Zapp:P)

P.P.S. Don't even get me started on BIOS crap...I hate dealing with BIOS even though it's simple to fix...*shudder*

I saw a server mobo once...It cost around 5k USD...Had four quad-core Xeon sockets and eight memory slots. Purported to support 32GB.

I stand corrected. Most of the computers I hang around cant handle more than 3G. But then Im not dealing with hightech stuff am I.

I might be looking for computer advice in the near future.
