Reverse engineering, mass production of weapons and spare parts. Realistically, virtually every major faction would have access to almost every weapon in the game, through espionage, salvage, etc, save for such instances where there is almost zero contact with another faction, Liberty and the Corsairs, Mollys and the GMG, for examples. Enemy factions within close proximity and in constant conflict would almost certainly have acquired enemy technology and put it to use, if found to be worth using. Pride only makes you obsolete and dead in such a situation.

And why is it countries like Iran are buying weapons from other countries instead of producing it themselves?

Most likley because they can't mass produce them as cheaply as they can buy them from another country, or as well. That doesn't mean to say that gun dealers couldn't repair a gun which isn't common in there country.

@Original question:

I agree that most factions should have pritty uniform weapons due to the fact u don't rearly own your ship. The only people who should be able to mount most weapons imo would be freelancers (As they own there ship and do salvage weapons) and independent traders (They visit different houses, so would have other houses technology avalible to them due to there dealings with the locals).

The US has for years used the M16 when for the most part the AK was an overall better weapon. Why did the US not switch to the AK?

afaik the ak has a wide spread, which makes it bad when your doing a sergical(SP) strike. Tho this is going "slightly" off topic.

After pondering Andrea's post....I am in full agreement them.

Any of my freelancer/mercenary characters wield either civvies or the weapons relating to the faction of their ship. Although they have no IFF.

I believe doing this sort of thing is OORP because take my rapidfire mercenary for example:

Flies Executioner equipped with Civvies and class 7/8 vengeance guns.

Now imagine him turning up at Manhattan (his home base) equipped with xeno tarantula guns.

He would more than likely be taken in for questioning to do with terrorism. And seen as liberty is the only place he can get spare parts for his ship he would not want to anger them.

On the other hand i try flying into the nearest unlawful base he would more than likely be KOS due to the executioner he is flying.

Personally if you want to equip whatever guns you want get a civilian ship and only land on zoner bases. Keep the IFF clear and the ID freelancer.

The M16 is a much better weapon in nearly all respects than the AK.

However, early in the M16 release in vietnam, when it was buggy (due to bad gunpowder fouling the gun), US soldiers did use AK's on occasion.

Back on topic, Military factions should only us their guns, not nomads like the KNF does. Mercs, BH's and freelancers (and any other character independent of a house) should use whatever is the best combination for them, that's well within their RP. Sanctions for these characters mixing weaps can't truthfully be called oorp sanctions.

The "can't get parts" thing is a red herring, anything can be repaired anywhere, the US still flies soviet jets for training without soviet parts.

... BHG can use whatever combination they want? Dude... Schroom check! They have their own line of weapons, where as Freelancers and Mercs do not.

I am sure that in much the same manner as militaries would grab any enemy technology for study until it could be integrated mainstream, the Bounty Hunters Guild offers a quaint reward for such technology from its members and disallows anyone from taking contracts while in possession of such, since the house militaries and police can't tell where you got it from at first glance and have no reason to trust that you didn't get it from collusion with enemy forces.

Actually, that works with everything. Corsairs will not service a Freelancer or mercenary in a Sabre or with Outcast weapons, even if they have the parts for it. They can't trust that he isn't a spy of some kind, or at the very least probably (although not definitely) is on good terms with them, for all they know any footage or witnesses to them being looted of destroyed Outcasts could be a setup of some kind.

Stick to one side of any fence unless you have a very, very firm grasp of exactly how it works, and why anyone should trust your story. And how you get replacements- with "conventional" equipment you are being supplied a fully new ship by your employer/commanding officer, they tend not to stock anything unusual and won't do so for anyone in particular. With unconventional stuff, where do you get another (for example) Nephyths from on your BAF? They don't keep them on shelves, you know.
