Firewall Discussion

Well, I've finally done it, I've gotten rid of avast! Home Edition. It was far to much of a resource hog, and has losts its touch from what it used to be compared to other virus shields. So, I've gotten ESET Smart Security (also known as NOD32 for all who are unfamiliar). Now, ESET has come with it's own personal firewall, right? Well, now the decision comes to mind. Which firewall would be considered better, Comodo or ESET? Comodo simply being a free firewall program that's done it's job (I hope...) so far, while ESET is a professional program. Then again, being free or buying something doesn't make a difference on what's better. All I need is something that will forsure block any outgoing connections I want (or any pending ones), that's what I need the most out of a firewall.

So, might as well ask, anyone ever had experience with the two?

In my opinion, for basic use, a firewall which follows rules you dictate is enough.

For that, and by what i recall right now, you have to block:

- All ICMP requests
- All netbeui/Netbios requests (unless from local network computers, using their IP/MAC as safeguard)
- Allow ports / ranges you know you will use and only allow it for the programs that will use them, if you know that information.
- Block every other port.

Remember that usually rules follow a hierarchical order. First one you put, it's the first one that will be used. So if you put a "block all ports" order on first, it will block all ports, disregarding any exception put after it.

I use Comodo. I've found it very transparent. I've found out things about microsoft and various other process that run because it shows them. Comodo shows every connection that every program has.

I don't really have much comparison with NOD, but Comodo is the best I've come across so far.

Although I have felt annoyed at Comodo, because its SO good. I have to allow menial little tasks that I've never had to before, but being slightly paranoid, I put up with it. On the other hand it does remember your decisions.

ESET is amazing. On my PC back home, it uses very little resources and the settings are easy to configure. While if you crank up the settings to do a scan, update, and regestry check at the same time, it will load your PC down a little bit because...well...that's a lot of things at once for the program to verify. When you setup the program, make sure that you have those set for different times. I would send you a screenshot, but I don't have any access to my PC back home in the states for another 22 days, or else I would.

Go with ESET, it's the best firewall that I've ever found and with little processing power.
