I didn't. I was gifted the game. Can't say I regret it to this day.

Someone let my brother try it for a while and he allegedly forgot about it so my brother kept it and now its mine

For me, I Walked into Best Buy looking around the PC Section, and there was a Bunch of People huddled around some Kind of a Game one was playing, when I managed to get close enough to see threw the Crowd of 15-20 People I got my First Glance at it, see they where running the game on one of there DEMO PC's and to show people what they could be playing, I think everyone that saw it wanted a copy. needless to say, By the time I got done watching, and decided to get a copy, they where totally out of copy's I came back for 2 weeks from time to time checking, and they where always gone about the time they hit the door lol about 3 months later I was going near it again and went in, and they only had 2 Copy's. well since then I have bought about 3-4 Copy's, but can only lay my Hands on one Remaining Copy where I think I know it is Smile

That was in 2003 when it came out, and I have been playing most of the time ever since. now I honestly wonder how many Games are there out there that has had this many followers playing this many hours a year! for this 20 Years. Personally I don't know of any. most die out and players lose interest!

So what makes this one so Darn Special?

I was in my early teen years when my father had Freelancer in its case and I asked him if I could play it. He gave it to me and I dont regret it. I used to stay up late replaying the campaign. This was way before I knew about the mod

Interesting responses. One of the first ever games played was Railway Tycoon. I have been playing the “make more money so as to update” since being introduced to computers games in 1989. I bought Freelancer on that strength, now playing it on and off since it originally came out. Once I finish it I should look around for other “space” games, until I get sick of that and come back to Freelancer

I've been a fan of the Traveller tabletop RPG since 1978. While searching for similar PC games, I discovered Wing Commander, then Wing Commander: Privateer that was similar to Freelancer, but came out years earlier. I had played Freelancer many years before I was able to buy a copy of Starlancer (Freelancer's predecessor), but by then, I didn't have a computer that could run Starlancer.

Why do I love Traveller and the many similar PC games? My favorite adventure/campaign type is a merchant (i.e. a trader in Freelancer) transporting cargo and passengers while fighting off and/or avoiding enemies. Keep in mind that "Firefly" and "Serenity" were loosely based on such a Traveller campaign.

What do I miss about Wing Commander: Privateer? I could have up to three missions active at once, so I could choose missions that lined up well together, but I had to get the missions done by the deadlines or they would fail, so I wouldn't collect the rewards and my reputation would suffer with the factions that gave me those missions, not to mention their allies. Also, I could do cargo transport missions, some of which required me to buy the cargo and get it to the destination by the deadline.

If you look at the original box for Freelancer, you can see that cargo transport missions (including some where you had to buy the cargo) were supposed to be included -- a feature that was dropped in the rush to get the game to market.

Saw it from a friend who had to original cd. Borrowed it and became obsessed with the game. My most favourite game till now, even with all these other new space games thats around now. And with discovery added the game is just x10 better.

Blessed in he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.
