Confused about trading

Hi there, as an old hand at FL but a noob here on Discovery I find myself a bit confused about the trading here. My first approach to learn a little about this universe was to trade my way around for a while and start getting to know the lie of things and work out the complexities of the factions etc. Not so easy! Of course I picked a tricky weekend to start, with the new "patch" dropping and everyone experiencing change at the same time but I'm beginning to think things are not easy here for the independent trader bumming around between the worlds.
Am I right in thinking this is a non-dynamic, fixed trading system? Is there any day to day fluctuation on availability and price? Is there supply and demand variation? If lots of people are mining and selling diamonds does the price come down?
How do I fund my lazy drift from system to system?
In terms of role play, how can a guy with a truck just travel and see the world?

The trading economy has always been fixed my friend, because of the engine limits.

The devs are aiming for the dynamic part to come through the use of player run bases, and the commodities they consume to operate and manufacture special equipment.

That part is still work in progress, so I would just do the regular routes for now. All are about equally viable.

Ah. So no lucky finds, no quick bargains. Isn't that all just a bit ....predictable?

So where is the best place to go for info on these fixed routes?

You can use tools like FLCompanion if you like "cheating" the "Discovery" part https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...tid=164528

Otherwise, just fly around, the new economy is set up quite logically, planets produce basic stuff, research complexes produce high tech stuff, shipyards make hull panels that are used by battleship fleets, prisons make consumer goods and alloys which are needed by planets, shipyards and research complexes.

Thanks for that, makes sense.

To be honest I do find FLCompanion quite tempting at this stage but can't get it to work. It tells me to buy diamonds where there's only water.

Thanks for that Snak. I suspect my problems come from when I installed Discovery - I tried to install to a different directory from vanilla but the install refused to work until I chose the SAME directory. If I try to reinstall will I have to reinstall both vanilla and Discovery or just Discovery? And how will I get back onto my Discovery account?
