Well I ALWAYS try to have an escort... its just annoying that if I get stopped by a pirate in a fighter he blows up my transport even if it means he dies after... cause I don't pay (cause well my escort is tangling with him) That pirate did end up with a 5 million price tag on his head though...
I have to agree with Ivan on the corsairs, they are the "fairest" of all pirates, although my character does quite a few food/pharma/deluxe food (for some party) for them. I generally get away with VIP transports (not to crete!) due to that;)
HOWEVER VIP's are not all that money wise, you have to divide the "gain" by 5 since they take 5 (!) slots... that cuts the massive difference in price by 5 and gives you a rather... average gain. Alien Organisms on the way back are very very sweet though (and almost make up for it)
The diamond niobium run is simply the best for money. I get 7-9 mil per run. For the VIP/Alien route through the O's I get 5 mil//9 mil
My suggestion? VIP's=4 places, which would put the routes at approximately the same. And try (heck use some of the route analyzers out there to balance stuff) to get a "good" trade route running in all sectors.
As for bigger traders? Uhm no, my character would love it but... no. It would skew the trader vs pirates even more.
To Recap:
VIPs=4 slots (as opposed to 5)
"Good" routes in all systems (yeah easy to say)
Something in the rules about an escort (whats the point in paying for an escort if the pirate just blows me up o.O ... yeah I don't pay the escort... but unsatisfactory for everyone really)
I've tried to forget, I've tried SO HARD to forget...

Well I think the VIPs should take up 10 cargo slots myself with the profits raised and normal passengers taking up 4-5 with ammended profits. I mean it's rediculous to think of some 4000 people cramed into a Adv. Transport. Look at a patriot, now look at the pilot. Now look at the Adv Train. Do you see what I'm seeing?
*Throws in vote for better house transports* Moar! We need MOAR!

Maybe bigger one's without cruise engines? That would be a real counterweight. Sure you got trade lanes, but if you want some bigger money trips you're gonna need a big escort because most NPCs will eat you. My trans got eated by Wilde npc just now. Or maybe I was doing it wrong?:P
Edit a day later: Also, maybe it would be an idea to increase the base prices of for lets say all the big trade-route commodities.
Why?
At the current state Diamonds cost about 200 credits in Rheinland. You can sell em for bout I dunno 1400 or 1800. What if we add another 1000 to the base cost (and ofcourse the sell cost to not change the trade routers). What's the use of an upgraded price? Higher costs to fill up your cargo hold (e.g. 6 million (5000x1200) instead of 1 million (5000x200)) and thus making you somewhat more lenient to pay up to pirates instead of going for the: my cargo's worth only 1 million, now way I'm going to pay 2 million etc). On the other side the only discouraging thing I might consider is that pirates might just become too aggressive and just kill you for your cargo. Though that would be ooRP-way of pirating.

YES! That's how it should be, anyone alive would wan't to emigrate due to starvation... Also corsair mothers are very hardy women bearing lot's of children so, the need for emigration is great... //just make it cheap enough that it pays to take them away rather than bring them there...

Maybe because the thread was brought from the grave in the first place? You would be better off starting a new thread.
Btw, a group of people is rebuilding Sirius economy from scratch.
